  • Beneath the Surface

    Colin Fletcher•BOOK•Beneath the Surface•2023

Originally published in 1974, this book evaluates and compares three important styles of sociological research: positivism, symbolic interactionism and critique. The book describes and evaluates each research technique as an experience for the researcher, and the author explains what they themselves have learned of sociological meaning from engaging in it. The book traces the main ideas through their last generations of sociologists and asks what…

  • The Relevance of Domestic Property to Sociological Understanding

    Open Access•Colin Fletcher•ARTICLE•Sociology•1976•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Taken as a whole, this paper is an exercise in critical sociology. The history of the sociology of housing is briefly assessed. It is then argued that to make sense of the subject matter a conception of domestic property is needed. Domestic property is defined by the ownership and control of the means and relations of life-support. Sketches of hierarchical aspects of the phenomenon are given. Neo-feudalism is said to be the cultural characteristi…

  • On Replication

    Open Access•Colin Fletcher•ARTICLE•Sociology•1970•References: 4

Replication is not an automatic activity. Any replication involves decisions on the concepts, relationships, and contexts of the original and its re-examination. Two quotients can relate the two researches: a replicability quotient which considers the quality of the original and a generalizability quotient which focuses upon the replication. An account is given of a replication of Gouldner's cosmopolitanism thesis that illustrates the decisions e…

    Colin Fletcher•ARTICLE•Sociologie du Travail•1969•Cited by: 1
