  • Case Studies as Spurious Evaluations: The Example of Research on Educatioal Inequalities

Peter Foster, Roger Gomm et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2000•Cited by: 3

This article notes that much case study research focusing on educational inequalities is evaluative in character, in the sense that it draws value conclusions. Moreover, the evaluative character of these conclusions is often implicit. We argue that practical evaluation of this kind is inappropriate in research reports. We then discuss the legitimate role that values can play in case study research, notably in providing the basis for identifying i…

  • A Review of Reviews: Structure and function in reviews of educational research

    Open Access•Peter Foster, M Hammersley•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•1998

Reviews are one of the main means by which the findings of educational research are communicated to audiences outside the research community. In this article, we look at some aspects of the production of reviews in the light of this function. Attention is given to issues relating to the initiation of reviews, the definition of the field to be covered, the coverage and treatment of relevant research, and the drawing of conclusions. The discussion …

  • Equal Treatment and Cultural Difference in Multi‐ethnic Schools: A critique of the teacher ethnocentrism theory

    Peter Foster•ARTICLE•International Studies in…•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 6

This paper considers claims that students from minority ethnic backgrounds are treated less favourably than their white peers in schools because their teachers make negative, ethnocentric judgements of their behaviour. The paper challenges the empirical basis of these claims and the implicit model of good practice on which they are based. It goes on to examine some of the implications for teacher practice of this discussion. The aim is to try to …

  • Cases Not Proven: An evaluation of two studies of teacher racism

    Open Access•Peter Foster•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•1990•Cited by: 8•References: 3

In recent years a number of studies conducted in schools have claimed to provide evidence of the existence of racism amongst teachers, and practices within schools which significantly disadvantage many ethnic minority students. Unfortunately, there has been a tendency to accept such studies rather uncritically, without questioning the nature of the evidence they present to support their conclusions. In this paper I examine two such studies from a…
