The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Global Elites
The Oxford Handbook of the Sociology of Global Elites offers an unprecedented global overview of how elites shape, and are shaped by, the social, political, and economic landscapes of the 21st century. With unparalleled case study coverage from every continent, this volume brings together 41 chapters from leading scholars to deliver cutting-edge, original research and authoritative syntheses of a rapidly evolving field. It sheds light on how the …
Tackling wealth accumulation in a context of social upheaval
In this paper, we ask whether progressive reforms are possible in conditions of right-wing politics and elite opposition. We study the scope of a tax reform in the context of wealth concentration, socio-spatial segregation, political conflict and the elite's antipathy toward taxation using spatial analysis and interviews with wealthy taxpayers and key actors. Findings show that reform was possible at a critical juncture where increased demands fr…
Rethinking educational strategies through Bourdieu ́s “trialectic” of space
While educational decisions are considered a key mediator between residential and educational segregation, the role of spatial dimensions in the construction of educational strategies has been only recently studied. This article contributes to linking urban and educational research to examine decisions about schooling, using the case of Santiago, Chile. Empirical research included focus groups with parents and students at public and semi-public s…
Varieties of Economic Elites? Preliminary Results From the World Elite Database (WED)
The strategies, decisions and beliefs of those who occupy prominent positions of economic power have influence on very large corporations and the markets they dominate, on vast amounts of economic resources, and on the rules of the game. However, the sociology of elites faces a dual challenge: divergent conceptualisations of what can be considered as a position of economic power and internationally incompatible sources of information hinder compa…
The damages of stigma, the benefits of prestige
This study examines how perceived residential reputations – that is, how people think non-residents assess the reputation of their neighbourhood – affect neighbourhood attachment, including residents’ sense of belonging, local civic membership, social relationships and compliance with social rules and norms in the neighbourhood. We focus on Santiago, the capital city of Chile: a highly segregated context. We use data from the Chilean Longitudinal…
The Politics of the Elite
This book is a study of class formation at the top of the social hierarchies during the turbulent and changing early twenty-first century. Contrary to perceptions that privileged individuals exist according to little more than market and economic logics, the book provides evidence that they are by no means absent from politics and civic engagement. Adopting a focus on reproduction, distinction, and politics, it delves into the complex relationshi…
Neighbourhood cohesion as a form of privilege
Contrary to the idea that neighbourhood cohesion is something that inherently benefits the poor or counterbalances the forces of social exclusion, in this article we argue that it can also function as a mechanism of cumulative advantage. In order to explore this proposal, we offer a definition and key dimensions of neighbourhood cohesion based on three components: place attachment, local relations and commitment to the local common good. We test …
Neighbourhood conflicts, socio-spatial inequalities, and residential stigmatisation in Santiago, Chile
Struggles against Territorial Disqualification
A critical analysis of two conflicts associated with the displacement resulting from gentrification in Santiago, Chile, reveals that this displacement affects both the urban poor and the middle classes and that the common adversary is the real estate sector. The subjective experience of the groups involved can be understood in terms of the concept of territorial disqualification, a threat both to their positions in the social structure and to the…
Tertiarization in Chile
Tertiarization, or the shift to service economies with an increasing prevalence of non-manual occupations, has been identified as a central phenomenon in contemporary societies. With the purported numerical and political decline of traditional working-class sectors, the middle class has come to be seen in recent decades as the dominant one. This understanding of the way society has evolved has gone along with a growing interest in forms of social…
