Uncertain futures
This article analyzes how two Sufi communities in Aleppo which were deeply impacted by revolution and war in Syria were able to recreate themselves in new contexts, producing new temporalities and orientations towards the future in this process. The members of the Zawiya al-Hilaliyya used their ritual performances to recreate continuity between past and present, and to restore their capacity to anticipate to the future. The members of the Zawiya …
Mystical metaphors
This paper focuses on the role of ritual symbols in the process of constitution of moral selves in the context of Sufi religious practices of the zawiya al-Badinjkiyya in pre-civil war Aleppo, Syria. The experiences elicited in the dhikr aim to create an emotional and embodied connection to the transcendent realm of the divine reality and truth, constituting a performative arena where the individual insertion in the Sufi community is constantly a…
Mystical bodies/unruly bodies
Religious experience can be a tool for the constitution of social subjects, the construction of symbolic meanings and values, as well as for shaping the subjectivity and corporality of the faithful. An ethnographic account and analysis of the Sufi ritual, the darb al-shish, as it was performed in the zawiya (Sufi lodge) of shaykh Mahmud in Afrin, Syria, shows how religious experience allows the embodiment of capacities and dispositions that are l…

Charisma is an important feature of religious authority in Syrian Islam, since Sunni religiosity is mostly lived as a collective phenomenon in small communities organized around a charismatic religious leader, locally referred as shaykh or murshid (master). The fact that Syria never had a religious institution that could centralize Sunni Islam under its authority, such as Al -Azhar in Egypt, allowed local arrangements of religious power and prest…

The Anthropologist and the Initiated
The construction of the religious self of the members of the Sufi communities in Aleppo, Syria, is achieved through the embodiment of principles of the Sufi tradition as a form of corporality that the author calls the mystical body. This corporality is shaped and enacted in the mystical experiences that the Sufis have during the rituals and religious practices linked to their initiation into the mystical path of Sufism. Thus, the author aims at r…
