The Relationship of Anxiety and Depression to Subjective Well-Being in a Mainland Chinese Sample
Andrew K. Diemer. The Politics of Black Citizenship
On the eve of the Civil War, Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney articulated as clearly as anyone the nineteenth century’s white republic ideology in his majority opinion in Dred Scott v. John. F. A. Sandford (1857). His rendering of the African American’s place in American citizenship flowed from one ostensibly basic question: “Can a negro whose ancestors were imported into this country and sold as slaves become a member of the political …
Effect of Different Meditation Types on Migraine Headache Medication Use
Spiritual meditation has been found to reduce the frequency of migraines and physiological reactivity to stress. However, little is known about how introducing a spirituality component into a meditation intervention impacts analgesic medication usage. In this study, 92 meditation-naïve participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: (1) Spiritual Meditation, (n = 25), (2) Internally Focused Secular Meditation (n = 23), (3) Externally F…

The Organic Globalizer
This article argues that hip-hop is an “organic globalizer.” No matter its pervasiveness or its reach around the world, hip-hop ultimately remains a grassroots phenomenon that is born of the community from which it permeates. The authors contend that the political development of hip-hop in the United States holds important lessons for global political and social transformation. They identify three stages in its development:(1) the cultural awaren…

Democratic Action Research (Dare) and Large Scale Simulations
The last vote was counted in the 2004 presidential election and old debates began anew about the causes of low turnout of those between the ages of 18 and 24. Despite an unprecedented amount of time and effort spent on turning out the youth vote, the data suggest that only about half of the eligible voters between the ages of 18 and 24 cast a vote for president. The good news is that, indeed, this year's figures reverse a downward trend in voter …
Race Formation, Voting Rights, and Democratization in the Antebellum North
This article puts forth a theoretical framework for understanding the impact of race on democratization across much of the antebellum North in the United States by looking at the changes in voting rights for blacks in four states. Racial voting restrictions across these state lines, despite different outcomes, can be understood by accounting for three factors: first, how racial conflict is structured through economic competition; second, how part…
