Resistance to Oppression in Informal Work
This article takes the study of informal work and resistance to oppression in a new direction. The literature assumes that subaltern resistance is either collective, open, and occasional; or individual, covert, and habitual. Resistance to Chronic Violence in Informal Workplaces
This article analyses the repertoire of individual strategies utilised by domestic workers to resist routinised workplace violence in the cities of São Paulo and Ilhéus, Brazil. Findings suggest that domestic workers favour two strategies of resistance: exit (quitting work without prior notice) and voice (negotiating workplace conditions). In the fall of2004, the Mexican Congress promulgated an important piece of legislation, which reformed the pension system of the employees of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). The actor-oriented analytical perspective on political regime change has generally depicted Latin-American entrepreneurs as holding socio-political preferences that are “intrinsically authoritarian.” This article seeks to test that assumption by analyzing the political attitudes of a section of Mexican big business: the private banking community. Crises of Confidence
This paper analyses the Mexican banks' loan policies since 1995. Based on a series of interviews, we find that Mexico's financial system is currently experiencing two crises. First, banks lack confidence in the business practices of small and medium size enterprises. This negative attitude is reinforced by the bankers' perception of a culture of non-repayment. Banks also loan little to big businesses, which rely on the international money market.…
