Learning about ‘inclusive’ pedagogies through a special school placement
Background It is well-established that traditional approaches to initial teacher education do not adequately prepare physical education (PE) teachers for teaching pupils with disabilities. Consequently, pupils with disabilities participate less frequently and in fewer PE activities than their age peers. School-based placements, which form a cornerstone of the professional socialisation phase of teacher education, can help to prepare prospective a…
Unsettling Conversations on Climate Action
I planned to canoe to Seattle to attend the 2021 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting. Although this might seem novel to some colleagues, canoe travel has been central to the go
Frailty and Social Isolation
Objective: The aim of the study was to compare uni- and multidimensional models of social isolation to improve the specificity of determining associations between social isolation and frailty. Methods: The study included participants aged ≥60 years from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing assessed for social isolation and frailty (frailty index and Fried phenotype) over a 4-year period. Factor analysis assessed whether social isolation was m…
Unsettling decolonizing geographies
Geographers have long reflected on our discipline's colonial history. Both Indigenous and non-Indigenous geographers have discussed ways of engaging Indigenous geographies and sought new ways of opening and expanding spaces for Indigenous peoples and Indigenous ways of knowing and being in our discipline. Like many social scientists, geographers name and frame this work in different ways; of late, decolonizing concepts and practices are increasin…
Indigeneity
Indigeneity is a relatively recent area of geographic scholarship. Conceptualizations of indigeneity are shifting and contested, and emerge within specific sociopolitical and historic contexts. Yet indigeneity has given rise to the originary place‐based modes of thinking and knowing across the globe, which existed long before the formation of the Western discipline of geography. Indigeneity can be understood from the diverse place‐based epistemol…

Rethinking the Politics of the Shift Left in Latin America
The shift left in Latin American politics has revealed critical weaknesses within the dominant structural, state- and society-based explanations concerning the politics of development in the region. This article argues that while elements of each remain relevant, there is a strong case for adopting a 'relational' frame of analysis that can capture the specific ways in which the Left came to power, and the unfolding implications for democracy and …
A global reference for human genetic variation
The 1000 Genomes Project set out to provide a comprehensive description of common human genetic variation by applying whole-genome sequencing to a diverse set of individuals from multiple populations. Here we report completion of the project, having reconstructed the genomes of 2,504 individuals from 26 populations using a combination of low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, deep exome sequencing, and dense microarray genotyping. We characterized…
Everyday Decolonization
This article is a joint exploration of what decolonization looks like in everyday interactions within our partnerships, families, and friendships on unceded Coast Salish territories. Stories from the authors--two cisgender queer women, one of whom is Indigenous and one of whom is a White settler--highlight intimate practices of allyship and decolonization that are often made invisible when activism is seen as only taking place in "public" spaces …
Ontologies of Indigeneity
This paper asks how Indigenous ways of being and knowing can become legitimized within western theorizations of ontology, given the ongoing (neo)colonial relations that shape geographic knowledge production. My analysis emerges within my narrative accounts of being a Kwakwaka'wakw scholar in two spaces of knowledge production: a geography conference and a potlatch. Through these stories, I engage with the individual embodied scales at which we re…
The International HapMap Project
The goal of the International HapMap Project is to determine the common patterns of DNA sequence variation in the human genome and to make this information freely available in the public domain. An international consortium is developing a map of these patterns across the genome by determining the genotypes of one million or more sequence variants, their frequencies and the degree of association between them, in DNA samples from populations with a…
