Now that’s what I call a history of the 1980s
Now that's what I call a history of the 1980s is a political and cultural History of Britain in the long 1980s in ten objects or moments. Neither a top down history, nor nostalgic celebration, it reframes the decade around local, national, and global politics of gender, race, age and sexuality.
Overdose response among trained and untrained women with a history of illicit drug use
Little is known about differences in bystander behavior among people who use drugs, trained and untrained in opioid overdose prevention. We examined three types of recommended overdose response - a 911 call, rescue breathing/CPR, and naloxone administration-among Philadelphia-based, predominantly street-involved women with a history of illicit drug use. The study utilized a convergent mixed methods approach integrating data from 186 quantitative …
How hard is it to remember Bananarama
Remembering and forgetting female pop musicians sits within the broader project of feminist and queer identity histories. The history of uncovering a past in order to inform the here and now raises questions about the relationship between lived experiences and the types of history that are produced. There is an assumption that each may inform the other. In the 1980s, within the academy, there was a growing understanding of the importance of remem…

Medical Education Program Highlights Focus on self-directed learning: First-year students participate in an “immersion” project as a part of the Foundations of Clinical Medicine course, designed to expose students to the clinical and social sides of medicine and focusing on self-directed learning. Students assess their personal learning needs, select educational activities to meet those needs, and practice skills for continued learning. The medic…

A Thematic Analysis of the Multidisciplinary Team Understanding of the 5P Team Formulation Model and Its Evaluation on a Psychosis Rehabilitation Unit
Putting Co-Exposures on Equal Footing
Epidemiologic evidence consistently links urban air pollution exposures to health, even after adjustment for potential spatial confounding by socioeconomic position (SEP), given concerns that air pollution sources may be clustered in and around lower-SEP communities. SEP, however, is often measured with less spatial and temporal resolution than are air pollution exposures (i.e., census-tract socio-demographics vs. fine-scale spatio-temporal air p…
Women’s Occupational Patterns and Later Life Physical Functioning
Objective: Timing and accumulation of work-related exposures may influence later life health. This study evaluates the association between women's work patterns and physical functioning. Method: Work history and physical functioning information was collected at baseline for U.S. women ages 50 to 79 years in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study ( N = 75,507). We estimated life course workforce participation patterns using latent class…
Youth Culture and Social Change
This chapter explores the experience of girls and young women involved in gang life. By drawing upon the testimony of gang-associated young people we ask whether young women are able to exercise enough power to build a credible identity and avoid victimisation in a patriarchal subculture that favours and fosters the agency of young men and positions young women as subordinate. We argue that young women are subjected to restrictions when attemptin…
Neighborhood Prices of Healthier and Unhealthier Foods and Associations with Diet Quality
It is known that the price of food influences the purchasing and consumption decisions of individuals; however, little work has examined if the price of healthier food relative to unhealthier food in an individual's neighborhood is associated with overall dietary quality while using data from multiple regions in the United States. Cross-sectional person-level data came from The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (exam 5, 2010-2012 n = 2765); a…
Exploring Impacts of Taxes and Hospitality Bans on Cigarette Prices and Smoking Prevalence Using a Large Dataset of Cigarette Prices at Stores 2001–2011, USA
In the USA, little is known about local variation in retail cigarette prices; price variation explained by taxes, bans, and area-level socio-demographics, and whether taxes and hospitality bans have synergistic effects on smoking prevalence. Cigarette prices 2001-2011 from chain supermarkets and drug stores ( n = 2973) were linked to state taxes ( n = 41), state and county bar/restaurant smoking bans, and census block group socio-demographics. Hi…
Work Characteristics Associated with Physical Functioning in Women
Women make up almost half of the labor force with older women becoming a growing segment of the population. Work characteristics influence physical functioning and women are at particular risk for physical limitations. However, little research has explored the effects of work characteristics on women's physical functioning. U.S. women between the ages of 50 and 79 were enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study between 1993 and…

Exhibition Review Punk’s 40th Anniversary—An Itchy Sort of Heritage
2016 was the officially designated ‘40th anniversary of Punk’. Two national exhibitions, Punks at the Museum of London and Punk 1976-78 at the British Library (BL), ran as part of a wider festival, Punk London, alongside numerous smaller and regional events. Punk London also involved a series of intertwined exhibitions and events across London, to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the Sex Pistols single Anarchy in the UK. The first punk…
Neighbourhood variation in the price of soda relative to milk and its association with neighbourhood socio-economic status and race
Objective Soda consumption is high in the USA, especially among minorities and individuals of lower socio-economic status (SES); this may be due to its affordable price in relation to healthier alternatives. The objective of the present study was to examine geospatial variation in price of milk and soda, and the price of milk relative to soda, by neighbourhood SES and proportion of Hispanic and black individuals. Design Retailer soda and milk pri…

Collaboration in, Collaboration Out
In this article I bring together the practical, pedagogical and theoretical implications of a relatively small digitization project, ‘Observing the 80s’, in order to explore the ways in which ‘the digital’ might transform historical practice. Borrowing from Benjamin’s work on production and reproduction I argue that not only are historians currently using digital tools in interesting ways, we are also well equipped to understand what the implicat…
The opposite of the band
In this article, two feminist historians from different generations trace Alan Sinfield’s ongoing influence on their work and practice from both an individual and collaborative perspective. We were funded by Santander to work in the Riot Grrrl archives in the Fales Library, New York. There we found the pleasures and faultlines of a DIY subculture that self-consciously intervened in the relationship between feminism and fandom. The zines and ‘netw…
Investigating the sixties at a sixties institution
This article considers historical approaches to the sixties over the last thirty years, and argues in favour of an integrative transnational and thematic approach to the period. Rather than a conventional survey of historiography, it anchors its analysis in an account of teaching practice at a particular university, itself founded in the sixties. It considers the relationship between emerging research perspectives and teaching, taking into accoun…

Putting the Charity Back into Charity Singles
The development of the charity single as a response to crisis is usually exemplified by the release of the Band Aid single ‘Do They Know it's Christmas’ in December 1984 and the Live Aid concerts in London and New York in July 1985. This article will explore the subsequent development of the charity single genre in Britain as a response to perceived crisis in the domestic context. The 1980s saw a series of events that were reacted to as domestic …
Gay Men and the Left in Post-war Britain
"This timely book demonstrates how the personal became political in post-war Britain, and argues that attention to gay activism can help us to fundamentally rethink the nature of post-war politics." "There is an assumption among many of today's politicians that young people are apathetic and disengaged. This book argues that these politicians are looking in the wrong place. People now feel that they can impact the world through the way in which t…
Soldiers' Stories of the Falklands War
This article will analyse the role of soldiers' own accounts in the construction of the Falklands War as disproportionately traumatic. The war was Britain's first following the development of a diagnostic model for post-traumatic stress disorder and this greatly influenced the value given to veterans' experiences. Writing memoirs of war was seen as a therapeutic practice. This article uses two case studies, Ken Lukowiak and Vince Bramley, to re-e…
