There have been and continue to be substantial exchanges regarding these initiatives. In 2007, the first initiative started to take shape. Organizations and associations organized a meeting of the profession titled Social Work: Future of the Profession. This meeting became k…

Developing a Research Agenda That Supports Global Practice
During the months of June and July 2013, two social work conferences convened that were highly focused on global practice and international social work. The Discovery of Celtic Italy
Geography and ethnography always played an important role in the historiographical traditions of the Greco-Roman world. Hecataeus and Herodotus were not just the fathers of history. Greek historians showed an abiding interest in the customs of foreign peoples and places. In the Hellenistic period, the scope and character of this interest developed in two ways through the opening up of new fields of inquiry in the wake of the conquests of Alexande…
Characterizing the Gauls
Greek science and Roman imperialism have emerged as significant themes for the understanding of the key texts on the geography of northern Italy from the period of the conquest and settlement in the second century BC contained in Polybius and Cato ‘s Origines. But what of the peoples who lived there? How were they imagined, and in what terms were they approached? Here too, differences between Roman and Greek ideas are apparent. What is common to …
Beyond the Rubicon
Throughout the middle and late Republican periods (fourth to first centuries BC) the Romans lived in fear and loathing of the Gauls of northern Italy, caused primarily by their collective historical memory of the destruction of the city of Rome by Gauls in 387 BC. By examining the literary evidence relating to the historical, ethnographic, and geographic writings of Greeks and Romans of the period - focusing on invasion and conflict - this book a…

Roman Building-Materials in South-East England
The study of building-materials has been much neglected in the past, but it is not merely the technical examination of constructional minutiae but rather a key to wider aspects of economic history. How well did Romano-British builders exploit available building materials? How did such materials influence architectural styles? Where suitable stone was not readily accessible did they improvise, or import better material from a distance? What tradin…
Excavations at Northwich ( Condate )
The Roman sites of the Cheshire Plain have, with the exception of Middlewich, received little excavation in recent years. Indeed there has been no previous excavation at Northwich. Despite a very large degree of disturbance and other archaeological difficulties, the excavations established the existence of a two-phase auxiliary fort of Flavian origin on the site. After abandonment in the mid-2nd century, part of the area examined was occupied by …
