System Architecture of a European Platform for Health Policy Decision Making: Midas
Background: Healthcare data is a rich yet underutilized resource due to its disconnected, heterogeneous nature. A means of connecting healthcare data and integrating it with additional open and social data in a secure way can support the monumental challenge policy-makers face in safely accessing all relevant data to assist in managing the health and wellbeing of all. The goal of this study was to develop a novel health data platform within the M…
Shoulder Pain in Covid-19 Survivors Following Mechanical Ventilation
COVID-19 has caused a certain proportion of patients to be hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU) and may cause musculoskeletal and neurological deficits following intubation and mechanical ventilation. The aim of this study was to quantify and describe the presence of shoulder pain in patients released from hospitals after suffering COVID-19. Patients with positive Apley tests were sent to a physiatrist for a clinical evaluation, ultrasound …
User Centered Virtual Coaching for Older Adults at Home Using SMART Goal Plans and I-Change Model
Preventive care and telemedicine are expected to play an important role in reducing the impact of an increasingly aging global population while increasing the number of healthy years. Virtual coaching is a promising research area to support this process. This paper presents a user-centered virtual coach for older adults at home to promote active and healthy aging and independent living. It supports behavior change processes for improving on cogni…

Minimum Wage and Productivity: Evidence from Chilean Manufacturing Plants
This paper analyzes the effects of the minimum wage on a firm’s productivity. The main hypothesis is that an increase in the minimum wage has a negative effect on total factor productivity (TFP) due to the existence of labor adjustment costs. Using data from Chilean manufacturing plants for the period 1992–2005 and a difference-in-differences methodology, we find that an increase in minimum wage had a negative effect on TFP. Our estimates indicat…
California
I utilize my situated position as anthropologist, academician, and citizen to argue not only that we should “think” California, but also that we should “rethink” our state—both its condition and its social cartography. To be clear, I see all my research and endeavors—my research on the US/Mexico border; my time among the markets and entrepreneurs I have worked and lived with; my focus on those places in which I was raised: Lemon Grove, Logan Heig…

The emergence and functioning of innovation intermediaries in maturing innovation systems: The case of Chile
Innovation intermediaries that build linkages in innovation systems are reportedly needed in many Latin American countries and other developing and emerging countries around the world that are said to have an immature innovation system. This study analyses the types of innovation intermediaries that have emerged in Chile, and how these have contributed to the development of a more mature innovation system. The findings indicate that a great diver…
Is Previous Export Experience Important for New Exports
Recent models of international trade show that trade costs are important determinants of exporting decisions. These theories, however, do not take into account that experienced firms may have lower trade costs, or that new exporters may reduce these costs by observing other exporters' decisions. We argue that previous experience exporting a product, or to a market, helps reduce entry costs for firms in international markets. Using firm-level data…
Multinationals as Stabilisers? Economic Crisis, Access to Finance, and Employment Growth
This article examines the comparative response of multinationals and domestic firms to an economic crisis, using the empirical setting of a well defined case of economic slowdown in Chile. We find that employment in manufacturing plants has been drastically reduced during the economic crisis. Our findings reveal that multinationals are more likely to exit contributing to the employment contraction during the crisis, but surviving foreign firms ex…
Credit contraction and international trade: Evidence from Chilean exporters
Exit in Developing Countries: Economic Reforms and Plant Heterogeneity
Several studies have found that plant turnover contributes to productivity growth. This evidence seems to be consistent with the idea that by reducing protection granted to inefficient firms, economic liberalization would generate productivity gains associated with resource reallocation from less productive to more productive firms. However, little empirical work has been done directly linking economic liberalization and plant exit. This article …
