Specifically, the article delineates the settings and social organization of trucker cruising, examines the structure of sex partnerships of truckers and cruisers, and delves into the unique database of one truckchaser who recorded 4,162 sex interactions with 2,499 different truckers during a 13-year period. Concurrent sexual partnerships of bisexual…

A re-examination of a textual quirk in the Mahābhārata

  • Consistency and character in the Mahābhārata

    Open Access•John D Smith•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2009

It is well known that the Mahābhārata sometimes contains narrative inconsistencies. In this article I consider a number of these, particularly certain cases in which one or more characters appear to be presented in an inconsistent manner. After considering possible explanations for the existence of such seeming discrepancies, I put forward the possibility that they are more apparent than real, and that the Mahābhārata was never intended to be rea…

  • Winged words revisited: Diction and meaning in Indian epic

    Open Access•John D Smith•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1999

Scholars working in the field of oral epic all have a particular form of words committed to memory-Milman Parry's celebrated definition of the formula. The definition in fact appears in two slightly differing forms in Parry's writing. In 1928 he wrote, 'In the diction of bardic poetry, the formula can be defined as an expression regularly used, under the same metrical conditions, to express an essential idea' (Parry, 1971: 13). Two years later ca…

In the preface to my restoration of the text of the Vīsaḷadevarāsa I remarked, 'To the best of my knowledge, it has never before been found necessary to emend an entire text on metrical principles'; and I rather assumed that it was unlikely ever to be found necessary again. I certainly did not imagine that a great part of my work over the next years would be devoted to further large-scale metrical emendation; yet so it has turned out, and what is…
