K’ui tii ‘Don’t speak!’ – Morphology and syntax of commands in Ts’ixa (Kalahari Khoe) and beyond
The Khoe-Kwadi language family makes up part of the typological unit “Southern African Khoisan” and is currently distributed across Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Despite a recent surge of new data from a broad range of languages, no descriptive or comparative study on the expression of commands has been undertaken. In this article, I show that the Kalahari Khoe language Ts’ixa spoken in northeastern Botswana possesses a de…
Towards a phonological typology of the Kalahari Basin Area languages
This article reports some results of the first large-scale, comprehensive survey of the phonological systems of the Khoisan languages of the Kalahari Basin Area. These languages are famous for their large sets of click phonemes, a typologically rare characteristic otherwise found only in a limited number of languages worldwide. They are also unique because the click phonemes carry a high functional load in terms of phonemic and lexical distinctio…
The meaning and form of onomatopoeias in Tjwao
The present article analyzes the meaning and form of onomatopoeias in Tjwao, a Khoe-Kwadi (Kalahari Khoe) language. Making use of a prototype approach to categorization, a corpus of 113 onomatopoeic lexemes were tested for their compliance with the semantic, phonetic, and morphological features associated with the prototype of onomatopoeias in scholarly literature. The evidence demonstrates that Tjwao onomatopoeias tend to instantiate the prototy…
Is Ts’ixa (Kalahari Khoe) a dialect of Shua
The endangered language Ts’ixa (Kalahari Khoe), spoken on the eastern fringe of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, is generally assumed to be a member of the Shua dialect cluster. In this paper, I reconsider this classification by taking a closer look at the interconnected domains of nominal gender and the marking of grammatical relations. Using doculect data assembled from both published and unpublished sources, I explore formal and functional aspects o…
Interjections in Tjwao
The present paper provides a systematic description of interjections in a moribund Eastern Kalahari Khoe language - Tjwao. After analysing original evidence within a prototype-driven approach, the authors conclude the following: (a) in Tjwao, the interjectional lexical class constitutes an internally diverse category confined between the canonical centre and a non-prototypical periphery; and (b) primary emotive interjections exhibit the highest d…
Beyond ‘Khoisan’
Greenberg’s (1954) concept of a ‘Khoisan’ language family, while heartily embraced by non-specialists, has been harshly criticized by linguists working on these languages. Evidence for Greenberg's hypothesis has proved to be seriously insufficient and little progress has been made in the intervening years in substantiating his claim by means of the standard comparative method. This volume goes beyond “Khoisan” in the linguistic sense by exploring…
