Towards an Historical Sociology of the Purāṇas
The aim of this paper is to canvass the possibility of what a sociological study of the Purāṇas might be. That is, whether this be the view(s) of society presented in the Purāṇas or the social conditions which may have produced the genre and individual texts within it. I argue that there is a very clear intertextual relationship between the Purāṇas and the Mahābhārata, even where there are considerable narrative differences. On the one hand, I se…

Armchair Warriors
Walk into any Veterans of Foreign Wars facility about an hour before last call. Three barstools down is an expert on all things political and military; or, as he says, he's “smarter than any of those damn politicians or the idiots who went to West Point.” With little prompting he will tell you and anyone else within earshot what is wrong with the country and how it can be fixed—“if anyone would listen to me which they won't.”Joel Davidson has cap…

Symmetrical Media Archaeology
In recent years a significant inter-disciplinary dialogue has been established under the general heading of media archaeology. Yet, this important wide-ranging conversation, which has considered the nature, affect, and ontology of media, has so far heard very little from archaeologists. This paper asks what special insight or approach archaeology or archaeologists—as commonly defined—might bring to these studies. A brief account of street media a…

Purana Pañcalaksana as Genealogy and Jatipurana
This paper investigates the extent and significance of a genealogical component within all the narratives dealing with the five famous characteristic topics (pañcalaksana) of the Puranas: creation, re-creation, lineage, periods of Manu, and the histories of dynasties. Whilst there is some evidence of a concern with genealogy in the narratives of creation and re-creation, lineage as both subject and framing device is far more in evidence in the ot…
Sociology of Early Buddhism
Transit, Transition
In July 2006 archaeologists from the University of Bristol and Atkins Heritage embarked on a contemporary archaeology project with a difference. We ‘excavated’ an old (1991) Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists and later by works and maintenance teams at the Ironbridge Museum. The object: to see what can be learnt from a very particular, common and characteristic type of contemporary place; to establish what archaeologists and archaeology can…

The Sociology of Early Buddhism
The sociology of early Buddhism
"The Sociology of Early Buddhism tells how and why the early monks were able to exploit the social and political conditions of mid-first millennium northeastern India in such a way as to ensure the growth of Buddhism into a major world religion. Its readership lies both within Buddhist studies and more widely among historians, sociologists and anthropologists of religion."--BOOK JACKET
The Sociology of Early Buddhism
Early Buddhism flourished because it was able to take up the challenge represented by buoyant economic conditions and the need for cultural uniformity in the newly emergent states in north-eastern India from the fifth century BCE onwards. This book begins with the apparent inconsistency of Buddhism, a renunciant movement, surviving within a strong urban environment, and draws out the implications of this. In spite of the Buddhist ascetic imperati…
