Numismatic Sources for the Bani Khalid Emirate in Local and Regional Context, 1669–1795
This article examines two types of coinage issued by the Bani Khalid Emirate in the eighteenth century as sources for understanding regional political and economic relationships. It focuses on two coins from al-Hasaʾ, the ṭawīlat al-Ḥasāʾ, a copper larin, and a set of copper fulūs. These are analysed together with local documentary sources to explore three key topics First, I situate the currency within the eighteenth-century ‘copper boom’, which…
Venetian Music in the Age of Vivaldi
This book contains sixteen essays on Venetian music in its last great period, stretching from the second half of the 17th century to the fall of the Republic in 1797. Two essays deal with musical institutions (academies and conservatories), nine with the life and works of Antonio Vivaldi, and five with contemporaries of Vivaldi active in Venice (Albinoni, Marcello, Vinaccesi). A substantial supplementary chapter updates, and where necessary revis…
Colloquy
The wealth of new source discoveries alongside an enormous growth in performing and recording of the music of Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745) over the last twenty years signals a pressing need for a critical edition of his complete works, including a thorough revision of the Zelenka-Werke-Verzeichnis (ZWV). The contributions to this colloquy consider principles around the composition of an editorial team, questions of methodology, cross-border col…
The Cheney Flute Sonatas Manuscript
This article describes and evaluates a manuscript album of English provenance from the early eighteenth century containing 24 anonymous solo sonatas for the transverse flute (traverso) and continuo. These are especially interesting in that they date from a period when this still rather novel instrument had, in England, very little purpose-written repertory within that genre. A study of concordances and contextual factors reveals that a large numb…
Perceiving Palestine
This article examines depictions of Palestine from above in the form of maps, high-elevation drawings and paintings, and aerial photography.Tracing the representations of Palestine from the mid-nineteenth century until the early twentieth, we explore how the imposition of a biblical landscape, supported by modern mapping surveys and the latest biblical scholarship, came to re-shape the Holy Land in the British imagination. Moreover, the imposition…
Christian Michael Wolff (1707–1789) and his Chorale Preludes for Organ
An organist by training and occupation, Christian Michael Wolff lived most of his life in the small Pomeranian town of Stettin (today, Szczecin in Poland), but a period spent in Berlin between 1728 and 1732 widened his horizons and brought his activity as a composer within the orbit of the so-called Berlin school, representative figures of which included the Graun brothers, J.J. Quantz and C.P.E. Bach. Four early orchestral works dating from the …
Mudge's Medley Concerto
A previously unnoticed concerto for two horns and strings published anonymously in London probably in late 1757 or 1758 is attributable to Richard Mudge (1718–63), a clergyman-composer best known for his Six Concertos in Seven Parts . The print names it A Concerto Principally Form'd upon Subjects Taken from Three Country Dances , and there is evidence to suggest that it is identical to the Medley Concerto listed elsewhere under Mudge's name. The …
Sparks of Happenstance
This paper explores the depiction of public celebration in the late Hamidian period in Ottoman Jerusalem through the relationship between textual and photographic sources, and between state performers and the viewing public. The joy of public celebrations on the sultan’s birthday and accession day conveyed in the Ottoman Turkish and Hebrew press was at odds with formal, flat photographs of the occasion, but in fact shared that aesthetic through i…
Protecting the Mediterranean
This article examines the evolving role of the Ottoman navy in the mid-eighteenth century in protecting Ottoman seas from maritime violence. Despite enjoying a general peace with its European neighbors, merchant shipping in the waters of the eastern Mediterranean and coastal settlements were frequently subject to seaborne violence from European privateers, Maltese corsairs, and domestic pirates. Based on extensive research in the Ottoman archives…
The Mysterious Matthew Novell
Matthew Novell has hitherto been one of the more obscure of the English musicians who wrote trio sonatas based largely on Corellian models in the years around 1700. His set of twelve sonatas, self-published in London in 1704 and reprinted in Amsterdam by Estienne Roger in 1705, is unusual for conforming to the ‘da camera’ rather than the ‘da chiesa’ type. Although their musical quality is modest, the sonatas contain several interesting features, …
Bread from the Lion’s Mouth
As Suraiya Faroqhi notes in the introduction to this volume (pp. 1–47), the study of Ottoman artisans and craftspeople is enjoying something of a renaissance, owing in no small part to Faroqhi’s own work. This volume brings together the research of fifteen scholars covering the late fifteenth to early twentieth century with case-studies from various regions in the empire. Although there is a degree of diversity with visits to Bursa, Hungary, Dama…
Giriş
On 24 June 2014, a small group of doctoral students and early career researchers met at the University of St Andrews to discuss ideas of contacts, encounters, and practices between the Ottoman Empire and European states between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.1 The east coast of Scotland may not seem the most obvious location for a workshop on Ottoman-European diplomacy – Scotland as an independent kingdom never sent ambassadors to Istanbu…
Anlatıların Antlaşması
This article examines the hitherto unexamined Ottoman Turkish text of the Capitulations granted to the British in 1641. As well as containing the articles governing Ottoman-British trade and diplomatic jurisdiction, the Capitulations contained a historical narrative that provided a formal record of diplomatic encounters and practices. By emphasising the importance of bringing tributary gifts and royal letters as a precondition for receiving the f…

Barocco padano e musici francescani
For four decades the Como branch of the association Antiquae Musicae Italicae Studiosi, headed by the commanding figure of Maurizio Padoan, has regaled us with volume after volume of conference proceedings in which north Italian music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is a thematic constant, but always with an additional element to create the kind of tight focus guaranteeing that if one article proves of interest, there will also be sev…
The Exalted Column, the Hejaz Railway and imperial legitimation in late Ottoman Haifa
This article examines the political and social tensions of late Ottoman Haifa through the history of the Hejaz Railway and a particular monument, the ‘Exalted Column’ ( Sütūn-u ʿĀlī ), a monument erected in 1903 to commemorate the beginning of Ottoman construction on the Haifa railway branch. By first establishing the use of railways and railway architecture as a means of exerting state power in a comparative and local perspective, the railway st…
Some notes on the life of Jacob Cervetto
Born probably in Verona, Jacob Cervetto ( c .1690–1783) was a leading performer on, and composer for, the cello in London during the middle decades of the eighteenth century. His career, while typical in some respects for an Italian musician resident in England, is unusual for the fact that he was Jewish by birth. Cervetto profited from this connection and from his extensive Continental links generally, although his acceptance into the mainstream…
The Baroque Libretto
Let us begin on a provocative note and simply ask: what is the point, in this day and age, of publishing in hardback, at a price currently around £40, a catalogue of Italian opera and oratorio librettos held by a university library, when the same information ought to be accessible instantly and without cost to scholars internationally through online publication, either as part of the regular university catalogue or, better still, as a separate, l…
Pastor Iver Brink's Sacred and Secular Music
Iver Brink (1665–1728) is familiar to students of Danish religious literature, but a published auction catalogue of his books (1729) shows him also to have been a discerning collector of music. Born in Norway, Brink settled in Copenhagen in 1686. After ordination, he became, in 1691, the first official pastor to the Danish community in London. Returning in 1701, he worked as pastor at two Copenhagen churches. In 1708–9 he accompanied King Frederi…
Il 'concerto grosso' romano
Remarkably, the Baroque concerto continues to be a controversial field of research even beyond the hundredth anniversary of Arnold Schering's Geschichte des Instrumentalkonzerts bis auf die Gegenwart (Leipzig, 1905), which was the first comprehensive survey of the genre. Part of the trouble lies in the fact that simple expressions that we would ideally like to have perfect taxonomic clarity, such as ‘concerto grosso’ , ‘da chiesa’ , and even ‘sol…
J. S. Bach's Concerted Ensemble Music
As the editor of this sixth volume of Bach Perspectives, Gregory Butler explains in a preface that its purpose is to explore current issues around Bach's so-called orchestral suites, or ‘French’ overtures (ouvertures). This it certainly does, but not in any routine fashion. The prime focus is unequivocally BWV 1067, the Overture in B minor for flute and strings (in its entry for this work the index curiously misleads by directing the reader merel…
The Chamber Cantatas of Antonio Vivaldi
Detailed survey of Vivaldi's unjustly neglected chamber cantatas, showing them to stand comparison with his more famous works. Vivaldi's chamber cantatas for solo voice, some forty in total, are steadily gaining in popularity: but because of their relatively small place in the oeuvre of a composer famed for his productivity, and also on account of the general scholarly neglect of their genre, they are little discussed in the literature. This book…
