  • More Auspicious Shores

Robert Murray, R Charles Murray•ARTICLE•Journal of West African History•2023

More Auspicious Shores: Barbadian Migration to Liberia, Blackness, and the Making of an African Republic begins with the evocative line, “Liberia was not prepared to accommodate the fullness of blackness” (1). Although Liberia began in 1822 as a colony established by the American Colonization Society (ACS) as a receptacle for African Americans to settle in Africa, Caree A. Banton's story begins after its independence in 1847 with the arrival of 3…

  • Recess in the 21st Century Post‐Covid World

Open Access•Global Recess Alliance, Catherine L Ramstetter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2022

The abrupt onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world into frenzied action, creating a series of ongoing stressors: school/work closings, remote learning, canceled events, family strife, fear, and a significant loss of social interactions. It is now unsurprising to learn that children's mental health has suffered. As social connection is tightly entwined with children's mental health, supporting school-based spaces for quality social interac…

  • Atlantic Passages

    Robert Murray•BOOK•Atlantic Passages•2021•Cited by: 6

Established by the American Colonization Society in the early nineteenth century as a settlement for free people of color, the West African colony of Liberia is usually seen as an endpoint in the journeys of those who traveled there. In Atlantic Passages, Robert Murray reveals that many Liberian settlers did not remain in Africa but returned repeatedly to the United States, and he explores the ways this movement shaped the construction of race in…

    Open Access•Catherine Loughlin, Robert Murray•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2013•Cited by: 9•References: 79

While recognizing the daunting task of defining universal indicators of job quality we may overlook something more fundamental: in North America about a third of people may not want to be employed in their current job status. Job status congruence (i.e. the extent to which people are working full-time, contract, or part-time by choice) may now be an integral part of high quality work. We test this proposition using a process-oriented theoretical …

Ahmed H Kissebah, NADARAJEN VYDELINGUM et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Clinical…•1982

The importance of body fat distribution as a predictor of metabolic aberrations was evaluated in 9 nonobese and 25 obese, apparently healthy women. Plasma glucose and insulin levels during oral glucose loading were significantly higher in women with predominantly upper body segment obesity than in women with lower body segment obesity. Of the former group, 10 of 16 subjects had diabetic glucose tolerance results, while none of the latter group wa…

  • Paired-Associate and Emotional Learning Through Television Modeling

Hugh McGinley, Robert Murray•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1979•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Female undergraduates (N = 68) watched a closed circuit television picture of a male model while he learned a paired-associate list and supposedly received electric shock when he erred. Following the model's learning of the list, the observers first rated a list of CVCs, including a critical CVC which had been associated with seven electric shocks to the model, and then learned the paired-associate list. As compared to control group Ss, the obser…

The harmonic mean and Kramer procedures have been recommended for use with the Tukey multiple comparison test when group sizes are unequal. The only study that has compared these procedures maximally varied the disparity between the groups for a 3: 1 difference. The present investigation varied the disparity between the groups, the number of groups and the nominal significance levels. It was found that rarely did the empirical Type I error probab…

    Open Access•Robert Murray•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•1974

Throughout the present century historians of Christian asceticism, especially in the Syriac-speaking area, have returned repeatedly to the problem posed by a passage in Aphrahat's seventh Demonstration , the natural implication of which seems to be that in his day baptism was reserved for those who consecrated themselves to Christ in virginity or by renouncing marital intercourse, to become members of the ‘Covenant’ ( qyāmâ ) which was evidently …
