Morris Goodman, Martin Goodman et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 5

The European environmental movement has been reconfigured since the introduction of the pan-European public interest environmental law group based on the model founded in the USA around 1970. Yet it has been claimed that there is a low degree of success in transplanting legal practices from one national space to another. Examination of the successful transplantation of a US legal model to the European context by the law group ClientEarth shows bo…

Haldane saw her invited to the join the Pikes Peak Expedition in 1911. While the male team mem…

  • Religious Variety and the Temple in the Late Second Temple Period and its Aftermath

Morris Goodman, Martin Goodman•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•2009

This article challenges the standard picture that religious variety within Judaism before 70 CE was focused on the Temple, and that variety was replaced by unity in 70 when the Temple was destroyed. Evidence is presented that different groups shared the Temple despite their disagreements on how the cult should be organised, and it is argued that the loss of this shared institution did not cause such groups to disappear, although it may have made …

When Pompey Conquered Jerusalem in 63 bc, the Jews of Judaea were just one among many peoples in the Levant to fall under Roman sway, but by ad 135, two centuries later, after two great revolts in ad 66–70 and ad 132–5, the Jews had been singled out for exceptional hostility: not only were they forbidden to live in their sacred city and its environs but even the name of Judaea was expunged by Rome from the political map of the region. The questio…

  • Jews in a Graeco-Roman world

    Martin Goodman•BOOK•Jews in a Graeco-Roman world•2004

"The papers in this book represent a unique integration of Jewish history and classics. They tackle from different angles the extent to which Jews in the Graeco-Roman period differed from other peoples in the Mediterranean region, and how much Jewish evidence can be used for the history of the wider classical world. The authors make extensive use not only of types of evidence familiar to classicists, such as inscriptions and the writings of Josep…

The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Studies covers all the main areas currently taught and researched as part of Jewish studies in universities throughout the world, especially in Europe, the United States, and Israel. The span of the volume chronologically and geographically is thus enormous, but all international contributors have in common their expertise in the study of the history, literature, religion, and culture of the Jews. Jewish studies is a…

  • Representations of Empire: Rome and the Mediterranean World

Alan K Bowman, Hannah M Cotton et al.•BOOK•Representations of empire•2002

This book covers the whole of the period in which Rome dominated the Mediterranean world. The belief shared by all the contributors is that the Roman empire is best understood from the standpoint of the Mediterranean world looking in to Rome, rather than from Rome looking out. The chapters focus on the development of political institutions in Rome itself and in her empire, and on the nature of the relationship between Rome and her provincial subj…

  • A Note on Josephus, the Pharisees and Ancestral Tradition

Morris Goodman, Martin Goodman•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•1999•Cited by: 1

There has been for many years an intense debate over the influence of the Pharisees in late Second Temple Judaism. Pharisees encouraged ordinary Jews to keep ancestral customs common to all Jews. Josephus wrote in the context of the struggle between the Pharisees and Sadducees in the Hasmonean period as if the Pharisees were responsible for establishing and introducing as well as transmitting such customs, but the customs themselves cannot have b…

  • Mission and Conversion: Proselytizing in the religious history of the Roman Empire

Morris Goodman, Martin Goodman•BOOK•Mission and conversion•1995

This book tackles a central problem of Jewish and comparative religious history: proselytization and the origins of mission in the Early Church. Why did some individuals in the first four centuries of the Christian era believe it desirable to persuade as many outsiders as possible to join their religious group, while others did not? In this book, the author offers a new explanation of the origins of mission in this period, arguing that mission is…

  • A Note on the Qumran Sectarians, the Essenes and Josephus

Morris Goodman, Martin Goodman•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Studies•1995•Cited by: 1

The basis of the Essenes hypothesis lies in the similarities between the communal life laid down in the sectarian rules and the communal life ascribed to the Essenes by some of the Greek and Latin authors who referred to them. It is easy to show that all the extant literary sources apart from Josephus provide only a partial picture of first-century Judaism. The only ancient author to mention Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots and Judaeo-Christians as …

    Open Access•Morris Goodman, Martin Goodman•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 5

In A.D. 96 Nerva courted popularity in Rome for his new regime by changing the way in which the special tax on Jews payable to the fiscus Judaicus was exacted. The reform was widely advertised by the issue of coins, under the auspices of the senate, with the proclamation ‘fisci Judaici calumnia sublata’. Precisely how Nerva removed the calumnia no source states, but it can be surmised. The tax did not cease to be collected, for its imposition was…

Open Access•Morris Goodman, Martin Goodman•BOOK•Ruling Class of Judaea•1987

This book examines why in AD 66 a revolt against Rome broke out in Judaea. It attempts to explain both the rebellion itself and its temporary success by discussing the role of the Jewish ruling class in the sixty years preceding the war and within the independent state which lasted until the destruction of the Temple in AD 70. The author seeks to show that the ultimate cause of the Revolt was a misunderstanding by Rome of the status criteria of J…
