The Cairo Geniza contains hundreds of letters of appeal, alms lists, and donor registers that give voice to the Egyptian Jewish poor during the Middle Ages. Paleographical analysis of these documents reveals much about the poor's distress—particularly their hunger and lack of clothing—as well as the Jewish community's manner of dealing with them
