  • Husbands and Wives in Qin and Han-Dynasty Bamboo Legal Texts

    Open Access•Anne Behnke Kinney•ARTICLE•Journal of Chinese History•2022

In Qin and Han times, the establishment of a complex legal system that applied to every member of the empire brought about an unprecedented transformation of the husband–wife relationship, changing it from a bond largely determined by custom, ritual, and family concerns to one regulated by law. Laws recorded in the Zhangjiashan bamboo legal texts reveal that women's legal status in Qin and Han times was far higher and allowed for greater autonomy…

  • Chinese Views of Childhood

Kenneth J Dewoskin, Charlotte Furth et al.•BOOK•Chinese Views of Childhood•2017

Chinese in the twentieth century, intent on modernizing their country, condemned their inherited culture in part on the grounds that it was oppressive to the young. The authors of this pioneering volume provide us with the evidence to re-examine those charges. Drawing on sources ranging from art to medical treatises, fiction, and funerary writings, they separate out the many complexities in the Chinese cultural construction of childhood and the w…

  • The Anxiety of Leisure in Early China

    Anne Behnke Kinney•ARTICLE•The Chinese Historical Review•2016•References: 1

The present study focuses on the concept of leisure in early China. Leisure is a form of disengagement with the usual concerns of life; but the message of many early texts is that there is no time in which one can afford to be disengaged. However, toward the mid-to-late Spring and Autumn period, when traditional power structures began to spiral out of control, political disengagement became a morally acceptable option for those faced with unscrup…

  • Exemplary Women of Early China

Anne Behnke Kinney•BOOK•Exemplary Women Of Early China…•2014

In early China, was it correct for a woman to disobey her father, contradict her husband, or shape the public policy of a son who ruled over a dynasty or state? According to the Lienü zhuan , or Categorized Biographies of Women , it was not only appropriate but necessary for women to step in with wise counsel when fathers, husbands, or rulers strayed from the path of virtue. Compiled toward the end of the Former Han dynasty (202 BCE-9 CE) by Liu …

  • A Spring and Autumn Family

Anne Behnke Kinney•ARTICLE•The Chinese Historical Review•2013

The present study focuses on the ways in which the Zuo zhuan depicts the disruptive and often violent impact of political ambition on the female members of the family of one woman, Bo Ji of Song, across three generations. It examines the ways in which the Zuo zhuan both characterizes the issues at stake and envisions measures to prevent the preemptory and ruthless disordering and dissolution of families for the sake of political expediency

Grant Hardy, Anne Behnke Kinney et al.•BOOK•The Establishment of the Han…•2005

The Han Dynasty created an enduring Chinese empire comparable to the Roman Empire. In this book, narrative chapters, biographical sketches, and translated primary documents give readers a unique overview of this important founding dynasty. The Han Dynasty (206 B.C.E. to C.E. 221) ruled a large prosperous Chinese empire that was roughly contemporary with the Roman Empire and comparable in size. The Han was founded by Liu Bang who ruled as Emperor …

  • Infant Abandonment in Early China

    Open Access•Anne Behnke Kinney•ARTICLE•Early China•1993

Examining the birth and population control methods employed by a given culture reveals much about the power and politics of its religious and legal institutions; it can also yield important conclusions about the hierarchical relations between young and old and male and female. But conventional methods for controlling the size and gender composition of a family in the early phases of Chinese history have received little attention. In this essay I …
