Rivers of the Asian Highlands: From Deep Time to the Climate Crisis
Rivers of the Asian Highlands introduces readers to the intersecting headwaters of Asia’s eight largest rivers, focusing on the upper reaches of two river systems: the Brahmaputra’s highland tributaries in the eastern Himalayan Mountains and the Dri Chu (upper Yangzi), which descends from the Tibetan Plateau’s east through the Hengduan Mountains. This book guides its readers through these two rivers’ physical, environmental, cultural, social, and…
Reappraisal and mentalizing: Perceived difficulty and effects on negative emotion
Previous work suggests that, in some circumstances, cognitive processes can be facilitated by engaging related processes. In this study, we investigated whether engaging in mentalizing during reappraisal, an emotion regulation strategy, would lead to greater changes in affect and reduce the perceived difficulty of reappraisal. We trained participants to reappraise negative pictures through reinterpretation. For some trials, participants generated…
Central Tibetan famines 1280-1400: When premodern climate change and bad governance starved Tibet
From the late-1200s to the mid-1400s, the river valleys of Central Tibet experienced both droughts and political upheavals. This combination of inclement weather and administrative dysfunction led to a series of famines. Although the famines were noted at the time, they were later forgotten in Tibetan narratives, and this is the first time that they are the subject of historical study. In this article we analyse the historical narratives of famin…
The Disputed Middle Ground: Tibetan Mādhyamikas on How to Interpret Nāgārjuna and Candrakīrti
By the twelfth century, a broad consensus had developed among Tibetan Buddhists: The Middle Way School (Madhyamaka) of Nāgārjuna (c. 2nd century), as interpreted by Candrakīrti (c. 600-650), would be normative in Tibet. However, Tibetans had inherited various trajectories of commentary on Madhyamaka, and schools of thought developed, each with a particular reading. This article will examine some of the major competing philosophical stances, focus…

Moving through stasis in Stan Brakhage’s Passage Through: A Ritual
Over a career spanning five decades and nearly 400 films, Passage Through: A Ritual (1990) stands out as an anomaly in Stan Brakhage’s filmography. Most conspicuously, Passage Through is distinguished by its bold soundtrack, rare for Brakhage, and its surprising and idiosyncratic engagement with minimalist aesthetics. The film runs for forty-six minutes and is in some respects a showcase for a musical improvisation by Fluxus composer Philip Corne…

Semi-presidential Regimes: Some Lessons for Australian Republicans
The activities of successive Governors General of Australia have traditionally been couched in secrecy and this has prevented any meaningful public discussion of the subject. This article argues that, regardless of whether Australia continues to be a monarchy or transforms itself into a republic, far-reaching reforms are essential to ensure greater accountability for the position of head of state. In the view of the authors, heads of state do pla…

Constrained parliamentarism in the New Zealand regime
In this article the ways in which the original Ackerman framework may be used in the assessment of checks and balances in New Zealand are considered. Does New Zealand conform to the ideals of constrained parliamentarism? In order to tackle this question, the eight institutional specifics of governance identified by Ackerman are looked into. The eight institutional specifics are (1) Parliamentary democracy, (2) Federal structure, (3) Strong upper …
Fiducial Governance: Heads of State and Monitory Branches
If we are to tackle the pressing problems of governance effectively in the new millennium, we need to reconsider the roles that heads of state could play in a form of politics suited to this new era. Such politics should be aimed at strengthening the trust that the citizenry places on those in public authority. To realize such politics, constitutional designers will need to continually shuttle between the levels of theory and practice. In this es…
Effects of Study Activities on Academic Achievement in University Students in Thailand
In this paper the influence of study activities on academic achievement at university level in Thailand is examined. The study concentrated on a group of 318 students (131 males and 187 females) in their final year at Mahidol University International College (MUIC) in Thailand. Results of this research…

Migration from Northern Ireland: A Survey of New Year Travellers as a Means of Identifying Emigrants
Travellers leaving Northern Ireland's air and sea ports at the end of the New Year holiday period 1988 were contacted as a means of identifying potential out-migrants. The method proved to be highly cost effective and reasonably successful. One thousand individuals who had either lived or had been born in Northern Ireland but who were now residing outside the province were obtained from 1,702 traveller contacts. The paper discusses the problems s…

Nigel Balchin and the Politics of Soundness
The bulk of Nigel Balchin's fiction follows the same pattern – a sound male character observing an unsound one; his plots are occasionally more complicated, as when a character examines critically his own soundness or when scientific soundness is transformed into political unacceptability. The novels are therefore a good guide to soundness as a golden mean. But rulers need to balance sense and vision. Balchin questions the value of bureaucratic g…

The Discipline of Public Administration and the Study of Local Government
No doubt my colleagues in this venture will attest to the wide range of contributions which Robert Parker and Dick Spann have made to the field of public administration. I have benefited greatly from these contributions, as well as from discussions with both, in particular from those with Dick Spann during my period in the Department of Government and Public Administration at the University of Sydney. However, the breadth of their coverage has no…

This paper analyses population change in the Belfast Urban Area (BUA) [of Northern Ireland] between 1971 and 1991 in its socio-economic context to understand the nature of urban social change. Although considering religious factors as a cause of population change, the research compares the BUA with other urban areas and relates developments in Belfast to some literature on sociospatial polarisation and the ¿underclass'.... The results suggest tha…
