The Early Glyptic of Tell Brak
This book is the most comprehensive treatment of the art of Syria in the third millennium BS. It is also the first book-length publication of material from the British excavations at Tell Brak (1976-1993). It is a catalogue of nearly 600 seals from Tell Brak (more than ten times as many as are available from any contemporary Syrian site), combined with a general study of the comparative material. It is both a basic work of reference and a new syn…
The Early Dynastic-Akkadian transition, Part 1. When did the Akkadian period begin?
We may want to recognise an “Akkadian period” in archaeology for two reasons. A sequence of periods is used as a system of chronological reference, and the Akkadian period conventionally represents the time from 2334–2154 BC (Walker 1995, 234). Periods are also used to define fields of analysis in which studies of social structure or other synchronic investigations may be conducted. The Akkadian period is known as the “first empire” which saw maj…

Tell Brak and Nagar
The seal impression Aleppo Museum 6763 was discovered by Sir Max Mallowan and published by him in Iraq IX (1947), pl. XXIV: 1. It is unclear how much contact Mallowan's epigraphist, Gadd, actually had with the material (Finkel 1985, 201), but in any case the inscriptions on the seal impressions were not then read. The Mallowan glyptic from Brak in Aleppo was missing for many years (Finkel 1985, 199 n.2), but has recently been rediscovered by Hami…
The Random Pegasus
This article explores the relationship between design structure and meaning in Middle Assyrian seals. In a discussion of style and meaning in art a structural distinction is proposed between designs which convey a message and designs which affirm reality. The development of the seals of the thirteenth century BC is described, and a change in the composition of the scenes is interpreted through a linguistic analogy. At first, the seals bore a spec…
Tell Brak 1990
The seals and seal impressions discovered at Tell Brak in the 1990 season are immediately published here, without a full discussion which will be included in a larger study of the Brak glyptic which I am now undertaking. Some comparisons can be found in the treatment of the Brak material from the Mallowan excavations in the Ashmolean catalogue (Buchanan 1966).The seals and sealings were for the most part found in the FS and SS sites, with some ot…
Middle Assyrian Glyptic from Tell Billa
The general character of the Middle Assyrian glyptic is well understood from the seal-impressions on the archives from Assur, Fakhariyah and Rimah. As a result of the work of Saporetti (1979) there is now a better dating of the Assyrian tablets than was available to the pioneers. Mayer-Opificius (1986) made useful progress on the chronology of the thirteenth century designs, and this has been further elaborated by the present writer (1990). There…
