The Weighty World of a “Standard Bearer”: The Influence of Help-Seeking Behaviors on Feeling Pressure
Interpersonal romantic relationships are heavily influenced by societal norms and beliefs. These beliefs can place a great deal of stress on a relationship’s capacity for self-efficacy and behavioral or emotional health. Risk factors associated with individuals’ feelings of “pressure to make their relationship look good to others” were investigated. Analyses were run using a nationally stratified sample (N = 1,112) randomly selected from 1 major …

Money in Mesopotamia
Although contemporary preconceptions about what money is or is not sometimes evoke doubt about the existence of money in ancient Mesopotamia, it seems clear that it did exist. Money was substance oriented, and coins, when they finally appear are weighed like any other valuable metal. The most common money substances were barley as cheap money and silver as the more expensive, but other substances were also used. As to the forms or shapes in which…

Twentyfive Years of Adolescent Problems
This study involved a comparison of large national samples of teenagers who responded to the same problem check list in 1956, 1967, and 1980. While there were substantial similarities among the three time periods, there were also significant differences. The 1956 and 1980 groups were quite alike and both were different compared to the 1968 group. Overall it appears that today's teenagers have returned to the conservatism of the '50s and have lost…

On the Absolute Value of the Assyrian qa and emār
I try to show here that we do not at present have any substantial evidence for fixing the absolute value of any Assyrian capacity unit. This situation is likely to remain so until epigraphist-philologists and archaeologists recognize the need for common effort to solve this problem. Departure point of the present study was the discovery that, in a group of twenty-one documents from Nimrud dated in the period 699–652 B.C. which derive ultimately f…

Sumerian Merchants and the Problem of Profit
The theory that the Sumerian economy was controlled by the state or temple has until recently been a premise generally accepted by those who have attempted to deal with economic activity in the third millennium B.C. This theory has necessarily had a profound effect upon the interpretation of the role of the merchant in this period of Mesopotamian history. Since our evidence is by no means sufficient to reconstruct merchant activity in detail, our…
