  • Transcendental Consciousness

Charles N Alexander, Robert W Cranson et al.•CHAPTER•Sleep and Dreams•2017

This chapter introduces a fourth major state of consciousness--transcendental consciousness--to distinguish it from the states of deep sleep, dreaming, including lucid dreaming, and waking, and to suggest its role in a model of human development to higher states of consciousness. The experience of the fourth state of consciousness has been described and its physiological correlates have been predicted by the Vedic psychology of Maharishi Mahesh Y…

  • Methodological concerns for meta-analyses of meditation: Comment on Sedlmeier et al. (2012)

    David W Orme-Johnson, David W Orme‐johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2014

We commend Sedlmeier et al. (2012) for their significant undertaking of meta-analysis of all meditation types on all psychological variables, but additional analyses may modify some of their conclusions. Whereas they suggest from visual inspection of funnel diagrams that there may be publication bias of underreporting low-effect studies on the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, quantitative tests do not indicate the presence of bias for an…

  • The Effects of the Maharishi Technology of the Unified Field: Reply to a Methodological Critique

    Open Access•David W Orme-Johnson, David W Orme‐johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This article replies to a methodological criticism of Orme-Johnson et al., (1988). The original study reported that participants in the Transcendental Meditation (TM) and TM-Sidhi program located in Jerusalem significantly reduced tension in “collective consciousness” and behavior as measured by decreased conflict in Lebanon and improvement on several social indicators in Israel. Specification of the independent variable on the basis of political…

  • International Peace Project in the Middle East: The Effects of the Maharishi Technology of the Unified Field

    Open Access•David W Orme-Johnson, David W Orme‐johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1988•Cited by: 11•References: 35

This prospective social experiment tests a new theory and technology for alleviating violent conflict through reducing societal stress in an underlying field of “collective consciousness.” It was predicted that group practice of the Maharishi Technology of the Unified Field (the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program) during August and September, 1983, in Jerusalem, would reduce stress in the collective consciousness and behavior of Israe…

  • Autonomic Stability and Transcendental Meditation

    David W Orme-Johnson, David W Orme‐johnson•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1973

Physiological indices of stress were found to be lower in people who regularly practiced Transcendental Meditation (N=14) than in nonmeditating control subjects (N=16). During normal waking (eyes open) a noxious loud tone (100 db, 0.5 sec, 3000 Hz) was presented to subjects a mean of once every 53 sec at irregular intervals. The stress reaction to each tone, as indicated by the galvanic skin response (GSR), was compared for the two groups. Habitu…
