  • Carbon capture and storage (CCS)

    Open Access•Mai Bui, Claire S Adjiman et al.•ARTICLE•Energy & Environmental Science•2018

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is vital to climate change mitigation, and has application across the economy, in addition to facilitating atmospheric carbon dioxide removal resulting in emissions offsets and net negative emissions. This contribution reviews the state-of-the-art and identifies key challenges which must be overcome in order to pave the way for its large-scale deployment.

  • River delta shoreline reworking and erosion in the Mediterranean and Black Seas

Open Access•Manon Besset, Edward J Anthony et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

The Mediterranean basin (including the Black Sea) is characterized by a plethora of deltas that have developed in a wave-influenced setting. Many of these deltas are sourced in sediments by river catchments that have been variably dammed. The vulnerability status of a selection of ten deltas subject to different levels of reduction in fluvial sediment supply following damming was analysed by quantifying changes in delta protrusion area and protru…

  • Years of lacustrine ecosystem changes from Lake Petit (Southern Alps, 2200 m a.s.l.)

    Open Access•Rosine Cartier, E Brisset et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015

Sediments from Lake Petit (2200 m a.s.l., Southern Alps) are particularly relevant for analysis of coupled landscape palaeoecology and palaeolimnology. Diatom assemblages, organic matter composition of sediments (total nitrogen and organic carbon) and Pediastrum boryanum concentrations were obtained from a 144-cm-long core, enabling the reconstruction of the aquatic ecosystem over nearly the last 5000 cal. BP. From 4800 to 4300 cal. BP, Lake Peti…

  • Human influence and the changing geomorphology of Mediterranean deltas and coasts over the last 6000years

  • Non-reversible geosystem destabilisation at 4200 cal. BP

    Open Access•E Brisset, Cécile Miramont et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 5•Referências: 14

A 144-cm-long core was obtained in Lake Petit (2200 m a.s.l., Mediterranean French Alps) in order to reconstruct past interactions between humans, the environment and the climate over the last five millennia using a multidisciplinary approach involving sedimentological, geochemical and botanical analyses. We show a complex pattern of environmental transformation. From 4800 to 4200 cal. BP, podzol-type soils progressively developed under forest co…

  • New data and a morphodynamic perspective on mid- to late-Holocene palaeoenvironmental changes in the French Flanders coastal plain, southern North Sea

    Open Access•Méha Mrani-Alaoui, Edward J Anthony•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Referências: 3

Eight mechanical cores, 50 auger holes, 145 borehole logs, and 19 radiocarbon ages are used to identify the sedimentary facies and patterns of mid- to late-Holocene development of the French North Sea coastal plain near the Belgian border. Stratigraphic sections show a shallow Pleistocene basement that deepens towards the North Sea, overlain by up to 11 m of deposits comprising basal peat representative of freshwater marsh development, covered in…

  • Economic case study of ash reactivation for a generic 150 MWe Canadian circulating fluidized bed combustor

    A Mackenzie, A P MacKenzie et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007

Reactivation of circulating fluidized bed combustor (CFBC) ash (mainly spent Ca‐based sorbent) has received much attention over the past 25–30 years, because of the inefficiency of the sulphur capture process. A wet grinding reactivation process, developed by CANMET Energy Technology Centre‐Ottawa (CETC‐O) and University of Toronto, has recently shown promising results in pilot‐ and demonstration‐scale testing. The process is effective in improvi…

  • Holocene Environmental Change and River-Mouth Sedimentation in the Baie des Anges, French Riviera

    Open Access•Michel Dubar, Edward J Anthony•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

River mouths on the steep, high-relief coast of the French Riviera exhibit thick sequences of Holocene marine, estuarine, deltaic, and river channel-floodplain sediments that overlie basal fluvial Pleistocene gravel. Gravel is uncommon in most of the early to middle Holocene aggradational-progradational marine, estuarine, deltaic sediments, despite an ample supply from rock units in the steep adjoining uplands. River-mouth gravel is common only i…
