    Open Access•Alain Froment•ARTICLE•The Journal of the International…•2024

From the end of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century, cranioscopy, or phrenology, claimed to diagnose deviant behaviour by examining cranial reliefs. This lead would not come to fruition but would allow the collection of a significant body of material that would be used to develop craniometry as a descriptive science of human diversity. Recent developments in brain imaging, however, show that while phrenology had anticipated the fun…

  • Nomadic pastoralists and sedentary farmers of the Sahel/Savannah Belt of Africa in the light of geometric morphometrics based on facial portraits

Open Access•Karel Kleisner, Šimon Pokorný et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 85

OBJECTIVES: The Sahel/Savannah belt is a region where two sympatric human subsistence strategies-nomadic pastoralism and sedentary farming-have been coexisting for millennia. While earlier studies focused on estimating population differentiation and genetic structure of this ecologically remarkable region's inhabitants, less effort has been expended on understanding the morphological variation among local populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To fi…

    Open Access•Alain Froment•ARTICLE•Spotlight•2016

A medical tomodensitometric study (TDM) was performed on a dry skull from the necropolis of Ancón in Peru. The skull, housed at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris, displays an anteroposterior, brachycephalic, oblique, asymmetric, and bilobar deformation. TDM permitted 3-D reconstructions of the skull, endocranium, and vault thickness. The external surface displayed deformation and asymmetry in the bone structures and the endocraniu…

Open Access•L Christie Rockwell, Elizabeth J Rowe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2012

OBJECTIVES: Global patterns of the incidence of cancer are often attributed to environmental and lifestyle differences between regions. Less attention has been given to global patterns of allelic variation of genes that may contribute to the risk of developing cancer. METHODS: We genotyped samples from 21 populations for four variants of the progesterone receptor (PR) gene. One is an Alu insertion in intron 7 which defines the PROGINS haplotype. …

  • Indirect evidence for the genetic determination of short stature in African Pygmies

    Open Access•Noémie S A Becker, Noémie S Becker et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Cited by: 13•References: 51

Central African Pygmy populations are known to be the shortest human populations worldwide. Many evolutionary hypotheses have been proposed to explain this short stature: adaptation to food limitations, climate, forest density, or high mortality rates. However, such hypotheses are difficult to test given the lack of long‐term surveys and demographic data. Whether the short stature observed nowadays in African Pygmy populations as compared to thei…

Cranial anomalies vary in degree of expression. Although some are nominal i.e. slight in expression, other anomalies are quite striking in appearance. Such is the case in a cranium recovered from the archaeological site of Carthage in Tunisia. Based on observations during ongoing research by the second author, this specimen was seen to exhibit a twinned right external auditory meatus. African Origins The modern human originated in Africa and subsequently spread across the globe. However, the genetic relationships among the diverse populations on the African continent have been unclear. Tishkoff et al. (p. 1035; see the cover, published online 30 April) provide a detailed genetic analysis of most major groups of African populations. The findings suggest that Africans represent 14 ancestral populations. Populations tend to be of…

  • Modern human cranial diversity in the Late Pleistocene of Africa and Eurasia: Evidence from Nazlet Khater, Peştera cu Oase, and Hofmeyr

Open Access•Isabelle Crevecoeur, Hélène Rougier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2009•Cited by: 25•References: 56

The origin and evolutionary history of modern humans is of considerable interest to paleoanthropologists and geneticists alike. Paleontological evidence suggests that recent humans originated and expanded from an African lineage that may have undergone demographic crises in the Late Pleistocene according to archaeological and genetic data. This would suggest that extant human populations derive from, and perhaps sample a restricted part of the ge…

  • Une approche écoanthropologique de la santé publique

    Open Access•Alain Froment•ARTICLE•Natures Sciences Sociétés•1997

Under the joint influences of anthropology and ecology, medical thinking is being steered into radical new avenues in which simple linear approaches (a given cause produces a given effect, a germ generates a disease) are no longer adequate. In the philosophy of what may be termed ‘eco-medicine”, disease can only be understood by taking into account the full complex of relations - cultural, social and biological - between Man and the environment. …

  • Climate-associated anthropometric variation between populations of the Niger bend

    Open Access•Alain Froment, J Hiernaux•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1984

A large set of measurements were taken on 512 women and 425 men belonging to ten populations of the Niger bend area, some of which live in the Sahelian, the other in the Sudanian climatic zones about 200 km apart. The two zones differ chiefly by a two-fold higher annual rainfall in the Sudanian zone. The pattern of differences in body weight, skinfold and limb circumferences suggests that the Sahelians allot proportionally more food and/or less p…

    Open Access•Alain Froment•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1989•References: 5

Four Cameroonian populations were studied for a large set of anthropometric measurements. Three groups live in the forest (two Bantuspeaking, and one pygmoid tribe) and the fourth one in the savanna plateau. Multivariate analysis of the morphological features showed that the two Bantu groups have very similar body morphology. This is interpreted to be a result of common genetic origin and of the fact that they inhabit the same environment Whereas…
