Biological variables in height growth of Japanese twins
The biological variables of twins differ significantly from those of singletons. It is important to recognize that singleton reference values do not correctly reflect the growth of twins
Interrelationship of the Age at Peak Velocity between Height, Chest Girth and Weight Growth in Japanese
Sex difference in somatometry viewed from a comparison of similarly tall men and women
The sex difference in body size and proportion was examined by comparing males and females of the same range of stature (170-179cm). Under the condition that there was no sex difference in stature, weight and Rohrer index, it was found that males were larger in sizes of the upper part of the trunk and upper limb girth, while females were larger in sizes of the pelvic part, length and girth of the lower limb, and subcutaneous fat thickness. No sex…
Some Findings on the Physical Status and Body Types in Japanese Viewed from the "Report of the Survey on the Physical Status in Japanese"
The nation-wide survey on the physical status in Japanese was made in 1978-1981 by the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology in the Ministry of International Trade and Industry Japan. Subjects consisted of more than 46, 000 men and women aged 4 months to 60 years and the measurements comprised more than 30 items. A report of the survey, basic statistics only, was published (limited edition) in 1984 through Nihon Kikaku Kyokai (Japanese Asso…
Age Changes in Intra-Pair Similarities of Japanese Twins with Regard to Stature, Body Weight, Chest Girth and Sitting Height
The age-change patterns in the intra-pair similarity were analysed of 216 twins about 4 metric traits for the age span from 7 to 17 years old. Patterns were discriminated into 6 types (A, B, C, D, E, F, ) according to the criterion set based on standardized RPD which was defined by the present authors in 1980. In all types but A, the intra-pair difference is markedly large in dizygotic twins (DZ) than in monozygotic twins (MZ). Types D, E, F in w…
Revised Percent Deviation and Coefficient of Similarity
Longitudinal follow-up of twins with a view to analizing physical types had been conducted by the authors annually from 1973. The study comprised anthropometric measurements, skeletal age, body composition by means of calf roentgenography, and photography with swimming suits. In the present paper, the first report of the study, 27 items of measurements and derived 24 indices were analyzed on 46 male monozygotic twins (MZ) aged from 12.5-13.5 year…
Longitudinal Observation on the Limb Growth of Japanese-American Hybrids with Special Regard to Seasonal Variation
Somatometric analysis was done on longitudinal data of limb growth obtained from 60 male and 31 female Japanese-American hybrids. It revealed the hybrids had the longer upper limbs than the Japanese and the shorter lower limbs than the Americans. It was suggested that the growth of the upper limb might have been influenced rather strongly by the American characters and that of the lower limb by the Japanese characters. In the girth growth of the …
Longitudinal Observation on the Pectoral Growth of Japanese- American Hybrids with Special Reference to the Difference in Growth Pattern between Thoracal and Extrathoracal Parts
The chest breadth and depth of 60 male and 31 female Japanese-American hybrids were longitudinally examined over a period from 6 to 15 years of age. In both measurements, the hybrids showed a tendency to approach Americans, or to become remote from Japanese, with advancing age. In order to analyse the thoracal (viscera) and extrathoracal (soft tissues) growth separately, the ages at peak velocity of both measurements were examined correlatively i…
Longitudinal observation on Anterior Trunk Height, Iliospinal Height, Biacromial Breadth and Bicristal Breadth of JapaneseAmerican Hybrids from 6 to 15 Years of Age
Japanese-American hybrid children, 60 males and 31 females, were measured repeatedly over a period from 6 to 15 years of age. Their growth was compared with that of the parental groups, Americans and Japanese. In general, White hybrids had longer trunk, shorter leg, narrower shoulder and broader pelvis than Negro hybrids, reflecting the difference between American Whites and Negroes. In respect to vertical sizes and proportions, hybrids tended to…

Longitudinal Observation on the Chest Circumference and Sitting Height of Japanese-American Hybrids from 6 to 15 Years of Age
The present longitudinal growth study was made on 36 male and 21 female Japanese-American hybrids to clarify age changes in mean values of the chest circumference and sitting height. Analysis was also made on age changes in size relative to stature in the same subjects.(1) In females, the chest circumference was greater in the hybrids than in the Japanese after puberty, probably because of the considerably better development of the breasts (mamma…
Longitudinal Observation on the Stature and Body Weight of Japanese American Hybrids from 6 to 15 years of Age
The average growth changes of the stature and body weight of JapaneseAmerican hybrids who live inwelfare homes for children in Japan were analysed. The complete longitudinal data of 36 boys and 21 girls were used.1) It did not affect the growth of the stature and body weight of the hybrids whether their fathers were whites or negroes.2) As compared with their parental groups, the hybrids were as tall as the Japanese at the age of 6 years, but the…
The Possibility of Identification on the Human IsolatedTeeth
It is important for anatomists as well as for anthropologists to identify humanisolated teeth as to where it was located in the jaws that is to say to diagnose the kind of teeth. However, the limit of the possibility in morphological identification has been neither discussed nor examined whatever. The authors of the present paper performed an experiment on this problem in order to clear up how far it goes and whether there is any differences in e…

Anthropological Studies on the Pterygoidal Process of the Sphenoidal Bone
I. IntroductionThe present communication describes morphological characters of the pterygoidal process from three points of view;first, age change in the Japanese from fetus to senility;second, periodical differences in the Japanese from prehistoric to modern times;third, racial differences among the three races-Chinese, Aino and Japanese. The pterygoidal pröcess was studied at first by W.WALDEYER(1893), followed by O.SPOTTEL(1896), both of whom c…
