The cross-sectional sample consisted of 285 children, 136 males and 149 females, 6 to 10 years old, attending elementary schools in Tortolí, a town in east-central Sardinia. The children of each sex were divided into two groups: endogamic and exogamic, the first including children from pare…

  • Blood lead levels in children from Sardinian villages at high risk of environmental crisis

    Open Access•E Sanna, A Liguori et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2002

This study reports blood lead levels measured in 1998 in children from three Sardinian villages: Portoscuso, Sant'Antioco, and Sestu. Portoscuso is located about 2 km from one of the most important industrial complexes in Sardinia. Sant'Antioco, together with the villages of Carbonia, Gonnesa, Portoscuso and San Giovanni Suergiu, is in the Sulcis-Iglesiente zone, defined as an “area of high risk of environmental crisis” on the basis of the Decree…

Lasker's coefficient of relationship was calculated between 14 villages in Sardinia in order to estimate biological relationships on the base of common surnames. The data derive from parish marriage registers for the periods 1800-1824 and 1950-1974. Through time, coefficients of relationship between villages are generally higher for neighbouring villages. Moreover, the Ri between values decreases as the geographic distances increase. The negative…

This paper reports blood lead levels in children from three Sardinian municipalities: Portoscuso, Iglesias, and Sestu. Portoscuso, chosen as the control area, is located about 2 km from one of the most important industrial complexes of the island. Iglesias was once an important zinc-lead mining centre. Sestu is a semi-urban centre located about 10 km from Cagliari (the islands's capital), and may be considered unexposed to lead pollution. Blood l…

  • Population structure in Sardinia on the basis of quantitative palmar dermatoglyphic traits

    Open Access•Giovanni Floris, M G Franceschi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1998•References: 1

We describe the genetic structure of twenty Sardinian subpopulations using quantitative palmar dermatoglyphic traits (a-b, and A-d counts, atd angle value, coefficient of Turpin and Lejeune, main line index, mean of A-, B-, C, and D-line terminations) of 3777 subjects (2043 males and 1734 females). The twenty subdivisions represent sixteen historical-geographic areas of the island in which people speaks Sardinian language, Sassarese and Gallura a…

    Open Access•E Sanna, E Usai et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Palmar pattern frequencies were used to calculate distance coefficients between Sardinian linguistic groups of males for the purpose of verifying, by means of correlation matrix analyses, whether or not the dermatoglyphic traits considered lead to a reliable identification of the biological relationships on the basis of the linguistic backgrounds of these groups. With Sanghvi's $$\sqrt {X^2 } $$ as the distance measure and by using palmar pattern…

  • Secular trend in height in Sardinian conscripts drafted from 1879-1883 to 1983-1986

    E Sanna, Gianluca Floris et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1993•Cited by: 4

This paper deals with the secular height trend in Sardinian conscripts. Between 1883 and 1986 an increase in height of 6.77 cm (0.66 cm/decade) was found. On comparing conscripts born in 1948-1949 (immediately after the Second World War) with those born in 1964-1968 one sees an increase in average height of 2.39 cm/decade, with a peak of 3.67 cm/decade in the comparison between subjects born in 1948-1949 and those born in 1955-1958.

  • Present-day G-6-PD deficit in Sardinia with respect to malarial morbidity and mortality in the past

E Sanna, Ruth Bruno et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1990

Current Gd- gene distribution in Sardinia is analyzed using data on a sample of 4300 Sardinian males examined at the time of their pre-military checkup from 1983 to 1986, as well as data in the literature. Also examined is the relationship of current G-6-PD deficit distribution to probable malarial morbidity and mortality during the first half of this century. From data on deficit distribution by altitude analyzed for 100 villages of the island, …

The finger and palmar prints of 118 women with breast cancer and of 37 women with cervix carcinamo were studied. The results were compared with two groups of healthy women, the first consisted of aged women (average age of 78.94) and the second of young women. Only four differences out of ten (40%) were significant between women with breast cancer and young women. One difference out of ten (10%) was significant in the comparison between women wit…

  • Somatovariants of Sardinian recruits from the three principal geographic areas of the island

Giovanni Floris, Damiano Formenti et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1990

Using the constitutional method based on somatovariants, three samples with a total of 1207 recruits, divided according to the three main geographic areas of Sardinia (North, Center, South) were compared. Individuals from the center of the island are lighter and shorter than those belonging to the other two regions. Since this somatic typology corresponds to expectations based on data analyzed in a previous investigation, the somatotype method ca…

  • Age at menarche in Sardinia (Italy)

Open Access•Giovanni Floris, Elsa Murgia et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

The median age at menarche in 1080 Sardinian girls (ages 11.00-16.49 years) was calculated with the status quo method and probit analysis as 12.78 +/- 0.06 years

  • Dermatoglyphic distances and different linguistic groups in Sardinia

    Open Access•E Sanna•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1986•Cited by: 4•References: 2

By means of Penrose's C H 2 , a matrix of dermatoglyphic distances was calculated from several palmar characteristics of 1831 males belonging to different Sardinian linguistic groups. Then, by means of cluster analysis, a dendrogram was constructed and compared with a diagram of the affinities among the linguistic groups. This comparison shows a good congruency between the dendrogram structure and the diagram of linguistic affinities

  • Some dermatoglyphic traits in breast carcinoma

Open Access•E Sanna, Gianluca Floris et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1986•Cited by: 1

The finger and palmar prints of 60 women with breast carcinoma were studied. The results were compared with two groups of healthy women, the first consisted of old women and the second of young women. The dermatoglyphics seem to be of little use in the diagnosis of cancers of ectodermic origin
