  • Who Produces Natural Wine (and Who Would Like To)

Open Access•Magalie Dubois, Efi Vasileiou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2025•References: 4

In a world where wine markets are losing ground, the natural wine segment appears healthy and growing, gaining an increasing acceptance among consumers, the media and within wineries product lines. This dynamic category is broadly understood as wine crafted from organic or biodynamic grapes, made with minimal cellar intervention and no additives, with the rare exception of small sulfite doses. However, despite its growth and relevance for rural e…

  • My Ancient Faith

    Ramón López•ARTICLE•Polity•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In this paper I consider the “Jeffersonian problem”: whether one generation has the right to bind future generations to an inherited constitutional order. Thomas Jefferson’s challenge rests on fundamental democratic principles of equality and consent, and therefore—while there may be substantial pragmatic reasons to be wary of his argument—any response must also remain true to those moral ideals. I argue that through the crisis of slavery and the…

  • The wealth gifted to the large-scale copper mining industry in Chile

Gino Sturla Zerené, Ramón López et al.•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2018

This article estimates the economic rents received by the 10 mines that comprise Chile’s large-scale private-sector copper-mining industry. The methodology used produces a conservative calculation and includes two corrections that have hitherto been ignored in the literature: the reimbursement of exploration expenses and the compensation needed for volatility in the copper price. Estimates show that the wealth transferred to these firms between 2…

  • On the Nexus Between Fiscal Policies and Sustainable Development

    Open Access•Ramón López, Ramon E López et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2016•Cited by: 8•References: 1

This paper hypothesizes that fiscal policy is one important factor determining whether or not environmentally and socially sustainable economic growth is possible. We postulate that tax policies affect the incentives to make the economy more or less dependent on natural resources and the environment as factors of production. So‐called pro‐growth tax policies consisting of a low tax burden, low direct taxes but high indirect ones, affect the compo…

  • The Gender Gap in Agricultural Productivity

Amparo Palacios-López, Ramón López•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2015

This paper hypothesises that labour and credit market imperfections – by discouraging off-farm income-generating activities and restricting access to inputs, respectively – affect female farm productivity more deeply than male productivity. The paper develops a theoretical model, which decomposes the contribution of various market imperfections to the gender productivity gap. Empirically we show that agricultural labour productivity is, on averag…

  • Global Increase in Climate-Related Disasters

    Open Access•Vinod Thomas, Ramón López et al.•ARTICLE•SSRN Electronic Journal•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Intense climate-related disasters — floods, storms, droughts, and heat waves — have been on the rise worldwide. At the same time and coupled with an increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, temperatures, on average, have been rising, and are becoming more variable and more extreme. Rainfall has also been more variable and more extreme

  • Global economic crises, environmental-resource scarcity and wealth concentration

    Ramón López•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2011•References: 1

Three new structural factors underlie the most recent global crisis: (i) the fact that several high-population countries have joined the growth process; (ii) the increasing scarcity of environmental and certain natural resources; and (iii) the extraordinary concentration of income and wealth that has occurred in the advanced economies over the last two decades. These structural changes have significantly strengthened the links between global grow…
