Fauna-sensitive road design in practice: Lessons from Australia
Fauna-sensitive road design (FSRD) seeks to reduce the ecological impacts of transport infrastructure, yet its application in Australia remains inconsistent and context-dependent. This study examines how FSRD is shaped by policy and institutional settings in Queensland and Victoria, combining Institutional Grammar Tool (IGT) analysis of key guidance documents with interviews from 22 practitioners. Results revealed a strong reliance on non-binding…
Diagram and Discourse in the Anatomy of Melancholy
This article examines the methodological, epistemological, aesthetic, and affective tensions between the promise of diagrammatic representation and the practice of discursive expression in Robert Burton’s The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621, first edition). It closely interprets the Anatomy ’s tabular logic and analytic claims per se and in conjunction with Burton’s inductive, imaginative prose. While the discursive gathering of copious particulars a…

On Sandoval Zapata’s Lyric Transformations
This article examines how the lyric poetry of Luis de Sandoval Zapata transforms different kinds of matter: literary, natural, and spiritual. It shows how Sandoval Zapata’s verse converges with novohispano festive culture, even as it serves as a subtle vehicle for pondering questions concerning mortality, temporality, and the mutable nature of substance. The Lives of Cleopatra and Octavia
Fielding obviously admired Grandison —she will later praise it warmly in the introduction to The Lives of Cleopatra and Octavia —but she is not obsequious in her admiration. The stories of Cleopatra and Octavia were available to Fielding principally in three forms: classical histories and biographies, modern histories and works of imaginative literature. Hoping to offer a more perfect contrast to Octavia and highlight the corrosive effects of pri…
A Political Biography of Sarah Fielding
A Political Biography of Sarah Fielding provides the most complete discussion of Fielding’s works and career currently available. Tracing the development of Fielding’s artistic and instructive agendas from her earliest publications forward, Johnson presents a compelling portrait of a deeply read author who sought to claim a place within literary culture for women’s experiences. As a practical didacticist, Fielding sought to teach her readers to l…

N+2, or a Late Renaissance Poetics of Enumeration Christopher D. Johnson I In a complex machine like the Space Shuttle or a computer network any single component or system (n) will sooner or later fail. Given this, typically engineers add another similar or identical component (n+1) to carry the load should it become necessary. N+2 means that there is a backup for the backup.1 Such redundancy, however, is nothing new, even if it formerly had diff…
