Breaking the Chains
This pilot study explores social workers’ challenges in implementing antiracist policies within their organizations. The researchers utilized critical consciousness and institutional betrayal to delve into the complex power dynamics within social work organizations. The experiences of seven frontline social workers were explored through narrative interviews, which revealed a misalignment between social work values and organizational culture. Soci…
Untangling the Web
Racism has been deemed a public health crisis in the United States, which has often led to racial trauma, warranting a need for adequate support within social work settings. Using critical reflection and a phenomenological approach, seven frontline social workers shared their lived experiences with antiracism in their practice and how racism impacts social work. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate…
Organizational Behaviour
Enough of a Self
This essay is dedicated to exploring a number of consequences of Roberto Esposito's "The Dispositif of the Person" for contemporary critiques of neo-liberalism. After an initial discussion of the significance of the term, dispositif (apparatus), for contemporary thought, especially in Giorgio Agamben's recent work, Esposito's articulation of person as apparatus is discussed in the context of Christian and Roman understandings of personhood. The r…

Improper Life
Has biopolitics actually become thanatopolitics, a field of study obsessed with death? Is there something about the nature of biopolitical thought today that makes it impossible to deploy affirmatively? If this is true, what can life-minded thinkers put forward as the merits of biopolitical reflection? These questions drive this intervention. This book argues that a "crypto-thanatopolitics" can be teased out of Heidegger's critique of technology …

Living Antagonistically
Living Antagonistically:Lorenzo Fabbri's Domesticating Derrida Timothy Campbell (bio) Review of: Lorenzo Fabbri, The Domestication of Derrida: Rorty, Pragmatism and Deconstruction. Trans. Daniele Manni, London: Continuum, 2008. Print. To choose security is to choose death. That such a lesson comes at the expense of Richard Rorty in a book on the relation of French deconstruction to American pragmatism is only one of the more compelling paradoxes …
Sensing at a Distance
Bios, Immunity, Life
Intended both as an introduction to the thought of the Italian philosopher Roberto Esposito and as a mapping of current biopolitical practice, this essay traces the contributions and the limits of recent Italian contributions to the discussion of biopolitics. The essay offers a summary of Esposito's insight into the relation of community and immunity and compares his thinking to other philosophers who take immunity as their object of study (parti…
The Immunization Paradigm
In the following excerpt from Bios , Esposito sketches the template of immunity as a response to what he calls a "hermeneutic block" in Foucault's notion of biopolitics. After singling out those moments of greatest tension in Foucault's reading of biopolitics especially as it relates to Nazi thanatopolitics, Esposito sets out in detail the most important features of what he calls the immunization paradigm. Consisting of three dispositifs , namely…
Scenarios of Poiesis
This essay attempts to read a number of interventions in Italian new media over the last decade as both a response to and an implicit critique of posthumanism. After a brief discussion of the principal terms in question—new media, interaction, and posthumanism—and a survey of the most important contributors to the discourse of posthumanism in Italy, the essay maps the principal features of Italian media as embodied by the works of three contempor…
Infinite Remoteness
Infinite Remoteness
Over the last decade Italian culture in the immediate aftermath of World War I came under increasing scrutiny as historians and cultural critics attempted to describe with greater precision a period Benedetto Croce writing in 1918 anticipated as "una lunga e perigliosa via" that could only be travelled by "temprando le proprie forze mentali e morali" (27). Linking the palpable sense of disorientation to the brutal logic of post-war capitalism and…
The Immaginazione Senza Fili and the Noise of Modern Life
In this article I examine the connections running between F.T. Marinetti's Futurist manifestos and wireless communication media in the early part of the 20th century. I set forth how two literary inventions, words-in-freedom ( parole in libertà) and a wireless imagination ( immaginazione senza fili), inscribe the newness of the wireless in the medium of writing; becoming the indices of an altered media environment in which the components of writi…
