Twelve tips to optimize group decision-making in medical education: ‘Tipping’ the scales toward wisdom of the crowd and minimizing groupthink
Group decision-making is now common in medical education, often used for decisions that are both complex and high stakes, such as determining whether to promote or remediate a trainee. In this context, it is often assumed that group decision making is superior to that of an individual, resulting in high quality decision outcomes through the pooling of collective knowledge and experience. Yet, while groups can outperform individuals, this is not g…

Toward Walter Benjamin's: Theory of the Novel
This essay proposes the thesis that the literary critical project launched by Walter Benjamin in his early work (from 1914 to 1922) opens an important and complex line of inquiry into the novel that has not been sufficiently appreciated—either in the reception of his work or with regard to the study of the novel more generally. Benjamin's early criticism does not contain a fully developed and comprehensive theory of the novel like the one offered…

Walter Benjamin’s Philology of Life: Methodological Reflections on “Two Poems by Friedrich Hölderlin”
Walter Benjamin’s Philology of Life: Methodological Reflections on “Two Poems by Friedrich Hölderlin” Kevin McLaughlin (bio) The connection between philology and life is central to Walter Benjamin’s early literary criticism. Benjamin frames this link as a question of the relation between reading and history in one of the notes composed just before his death: “The historical method is a philological method based on the book of life. ‘Read what was…
Biophilology: Walter Benjamin's Literary Critical Legacy
Biophilology:Walter Benjamin's Literary Critical Legacy Kevin McLaughlin (bio) I If, as is maintained in what follows, literary history is in the depths of a crisis, this crisis must be seen as part of a much broader one. —Walter Benjamin, "Literary History and Literary Science" When Benjamin wrote in the spring of 1931 of a "crisis" in literary history, he was returning to an issue that had preoccupied him since his student days (GS 3: 284; SW 2…
Culture and Messianism: Disinterestedness in Arnold
This article proposes a reconsideration of Matthew Arnold's concept of disinterestedness in the context of the later writings of Kant and of recent discussions of messianism, in particular Giorgio Agamben's study of St. Paul. It argues that disinterestedness in Arnold is a form of what Kant calls "moral fanaticism" based on the preservation of self-consciousness as the foundation of ethical and political obligation. By contrast, Arnold's most imp…

The Coming of Paper: Aesthetic Value from Ruskin to Benjamin
The Coming of Paper: Aesthetic Value from Ruskin to Benjamin Kevin McLaughlin Slowly, with eyes turned cautiously upward, he sought to learn what was happening up there, took one of the papers from the desk without looking at it, laid it on his open hand and raised it up gradually to the gentlemen while himself standing up. In doing so he had no definite purpose, but merely acted with the feeling that this was how he would have to conduct himself…
