Open Access•Katherine Bersch, Felix Garcia Lopez et al.•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2023•Cited by: 11•References: 51

Effective democratic governance rests on the executive’s ability to forge coalitions that can advance policy and sustain the government against challengers. Scholars have long focused on cabinet appointments to understand how executives build coalitions with their legislative allies. In many democracies, however, cabinet appointments at the ministerial level may only represent the tip of the iceberg. We show that administrative political appointe…

  • Clash between Science and Politics: The Covid-19 Pandemic in Brazil

Elisa Reis, Felix Garcia Lopez et al.•ARTICLE•Social research•2023

This article examines Brazil's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the implications of the politicization of science. We seek to identify what made possible a relatively successful immunization campaign, notwithstanding the opposition of anti-vaccine forces within the government, and look at how political power struggles informed choices that impaired the national production of vaccines. Finally, we look at negative signs emerging in attitudes …

  • Watchdogs in Our Midst: How Presidents Monitor Coalitions in Brazil's Multiparty Presidential Regime

Open Access•Carlos Pereira, Marta Batista et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 34

When delegating governing tasks to a coalition partner, the president would like to give a minister ample administrative powers to be able to effectively accomplish the political mission. Due to information asymmetries, the president runs the risk that this discretion might be used to pursue policy outcomes that may harm the president's preferences. This trade-off between delegation and control is key to understanding governance strategies the pr…

Cecíla Costa, Maria Da Conceição De Oliveira Carvalho Nogueira et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2009

Recent research has examined young women's sexual subjectivities and desires, yet has neglected the ways women in their twenties account for their sexual selves. The present study focuses on the discourses and discursive constructions available for young Portuguese women when talking about their sexual subjectivity. Data were collected through six focus group discussions with young Portuguese women. The goal was to analyse discursive construction…
