  • Reading Accuracy in Bilingual Dyslexic Students of Brazilian Portuguese (L1) and English (L2)

Open Access•Rebecca Reina, Marije Soto et al.•ARTICLE•Ilha do Desterro A Journal of…•2025

This collective case study investigates how dyslexia affects reading ability in the first and second language among six Brazilian students with dyslexia and a control group without dyslexia in grades 3 to 5 at a bilingual primary school. Two reading-aloud tests, one with real words and one with pseudowords, were administered in English (L2) and Brazilian Portuguese (L1). Dyslexic students made more errors than their typically developing peers acr…

  • Thematic Relations

Open Access•Mayda Rangel Gomes Peres, Marije Soto•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2024

This study explores the processing of noun-prep-noun combinations in prepositional phrases in Brazilian Portuguese, focusing on the syntactic-semantic relationship marked by prepositions, implies the semantic sense in which the noun is being modified. We chose to contrast particularly two types of thematic relationships like 'made of' and 'made for', categorized as: material and function (e.g. 'toalha de crochê', crocheted cloth vs. agulha de cro…

  • Dislexia, Bilinguismo e Educação

Open Access•Rebecca Reina, Marije Soto et al.•ARTICLE•Ilha do Desterro A Journal of…•2023

Open Access•Marina Rosa Ana Augusto, Marije Soto et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Letras•2021

O português do Brasil (PB) apresenta estratégias distintas para a formação de estruturas relativas: padrão, cortadora e resumptiva (Tarallo, 1983), sendo essa última pouco frequente, associada à baixa escolaridade, e geralmente favorecida apenas quando há uma distância linear maior, e envolve os traços [+humano], [-definido,-específico] do antecedente (Mollica, 1977; 2003). Quanto ao custo associado ao seu processamento, o preenchimento da posiçã…

  • The new neurocognitive science of language

    Open Access•Ana Regina Calindro, Marije Soto•ARTICLE•Revista Linguíʃtica•2020

Katrien Segaert is the head of the Neuroscience of Language lab at the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham (UK), where she is also affiliated with the Centre for Human Brain Health. Her research deals with the major question of how syntax and semantic processing are instantiated in the brain within the context of communicative settings, and how the neurobiological circuitry for sentence processing changes throughout our lives. He…

  • The functional analysis of the N400 component

    Open Access•Marije Soto, Aniela Improta França•ARTICLE•Revista Linguíʃtica•2020

In this study, we provide a functional analysis of the N400 component. This is a much replicated neurophysiological response which occurs 400ms after the onset of stimuli. This response is said to reflect the degree to which preceding context (sentences or priming words) predicts an upcoming word, and thus affects its processing. Competing hypotheses claim that cognitive operations underlying N400 effects are either lexical access or integration …

  • Morphological priming resists language and modality switching in late Dutch-Brazilian Portuguese bilinguals

Open Access•Marije Soto, Aline Gesualdi Manhães•ARTICLE•Revista de Estudos da Linguagem•2017•Cited by: 1

In this study, we aimed to investigate how late bilinguals of Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese (BP) engage in morphological processing in L2. Morphologically related and unrelated word pairs combined with cross-linguistic and cross-modal variations were presented in a lexical decision experiment in order to compare morphological priming effects in L2 and L1. We collected both reaction times and Event Related Potentials (ERPs). In L2, morphological …
