Integration challenges faced by immigrant entrepreneurs
This study aims to explore the integration challenges faced by immigrant entrepreneurs in Portugal. It employed a multiple case study approach, drawing on semi-structured interviews with nine immigrant entrepreneurs from three distinct communities in Portugal. The findings of this study highlight the role of social networks in enabling and shaping the entrepreneurial journeys of immigrants in Portugal. These networks act as a bridge to help immig…

Strategies for Developing Soft Skills Among Higher Engineering Courses
This study aims to explore how higher education institutions respond to the challenge of incorporating soft skills into their curricula. It employs a mixed-methods approach in which the quantitative analysis of the disciplines addressing this issue is complemented by a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with four higher education institutions in Portugal. The findings indicate that although the number of subjects specifical…
Portuguese Volunteer Firefighters in the Context of the Challenges Posed by the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic is producing not only epidemiological consequences on a global scale, but also political, economic, and social repercussions. The health care professionals that have been on the front lines fighting the pandemic need the support and assistance of other organizations to meet the many daily challenges. Volunteer firefighters stand out for their outreach approach and implementation of the Human2Human paradigm that has enabled t…

Seeing thought in the future
Humans have a sense of time continuity. The narration of the past has been materialized through writing, which has condensed their projection into the future in ways that are not immune to the influence of an ever-changing literacy capacity. In this paper, it is proposed that our thinking of future, its anticipation, prediction and, more appropriately, forecasting is literacy-based. After presenting (i.e., calling to the present) the individualis…
Seeing thought
The present paper, which is the first of two twin opinion papers, offers a theoretical approach of literacy and critical literacy in relation to language, thought, and reasoning. Literacy acquisition and practice proceed through two stages, which partially overlap in terms of processing abilities: the first is achieved when the learner becomes a skilled reader and writer, characterized by automatic word processing; the second, when reading compre…

The text aims to establish solidarity as a mechanism for access to the republic, not only as a political element, but as a structural element in the realization of collective individual and social aspects of human beings themselves. The opening is on the possibility of ceasing to be a voter supporting temporally ordered to be constituted in every day participatory actor in building the world of its own common, directly related to international sol…
Long-lasting attentional influence of negative and taboo words in an auditory variant of the emotional Stroop task
Using an auditory adaptation of the emotional and taboo Stroop tasks, the authors compared the effects of negative and taboo spoken words in mixed and blocked designs. Both types of words elicited carryover effects with mixed presentations and interference with blocked presentations, suggesting similar long-lasting attentional effects. Both were also relatively resilient to the long-lasting influence of the preceding emotional word. Hence, contra…
How Learning to Read Changes the Cortical Networks for Vision and Language
Reading, Writing, and Face Recognition Reading, not to mention writing and texting, is a relatively recent invention, and hence it is believed that a preliterate brain must adapt on the fly, so to speak, in learning how to process written words, rather than being able to rely upon evolutionarily ancient modifications of the visual system pathways. Dehaene et al. (p. 1359 , published online 11 November) examined the neural response to a range of v…
Auditory Word Serial Recall Benefits from Orthographic Dissimilarity
The influence of orthographic knowledge has been consistently observed in speech recognition and metaphonological tasks. The present study provides data suggesting that such influence also pervades other cognitive domains related to language abilities, such as verbal working memory. Using serial recall of auditory seven-word lists, we observed that inter-item orthographic dissimilarity assists verbal working memory by reducing or even avoiding th…
Is Phonological Encoding in Naming Influenced by Literacy
Orthographic Representations in Spoken Word Priming
The current study investigated the modulation by orthographic knowledge of the final overlap phonological priming effect, contrasting spoken prime-target pairs with congruent spellings (e.g., `carreau-bourreau', /karo/-/buro/) to pairs with incongruent spellings (e.g., `zéro-bourreau', /zero/-/buro/). Using materials and designs aimed at reducing the impact of response biases or strategies, no orthographic congruency effect was found in shadowing…

Music and modularity
It is argued that the current modular conception of the human mind has important implications for the status of music processing in the architecture of the cognitive system. This conceptualization led us to treat several issues that have been neglected in the cognitive study of music. The major issue concerns the importance of specifying both models and experimental tasks in terms of stages in information processing. This approach is advocated as…
Literacy and awareness of the units of speech
The notion of phonetic awareness is discussed. Experiments with preliterate children, illiterate adults, and nonalphabetic literates are reviewed, which show that literacy in an alphabetic system evokes phonetic awareness. It is suggested that literacy also contributes, though to a smaller extent, to the development of explicit segmentation of utterances into syllables. The assumption implicit in many studies that order of conscious recovery refl…
