  • Exploring Vocabulary Size and Oral Proficiency in Heritage Brazilian Portuguese

Open Access•Alexandre Alves Santos, Luiz Amaral et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2025

This study explores language proficiency in heritage language learners of Brazilian Portuguese through the relationship between vocabulary size and oral production. Many studies have assessed the proficiency of those learners by using subjective measures or by using tests that have not been validated experimentally, which is problematic due to the reliability of such measurements. To address this issue, this study used a vocabulary levels test an…

  • Pronominal Feature Re-assembly

Andie Faber, Luiz Amaral et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone…•2021

In this paper, we propose the implementation of a full-fledged feature-based lexicalist syntactic theory as a way to represent the possible configurations of features in the learner’s interlanguage and formalize a theory of acquisition based in feature reassembly. We describe gender agreement pronominal coindexation in Spanish using Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) and use it to analyze the results of a self-paced reading test with L1 …

  • How can linguists support language revitalization efforts in the Brazilian context

Open Access•Luiz Amaral, Luiz Augusto do Amaral•ARTICLE•Revista Linguíʃtica•2021

In the last 20 years, language revitalization efforts have grown to the point where we can now talk about a global movement to save the linguistic diversity that exists in different parts of the world. Linguists have long benefited from this multilingualism and in many cases have helped preserve it. In Brazil, we see a growing number of linguists from different subfields trying to find ways in which they can support indigenous communities in thei…

  • Estratégias para a revitalização de línguas ameaçadas e a realidade brasileira

    Open Access•Luiz Amaral•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 60

É hora de encararmos com seriedade e dedicação as demandas dos povos falantes de línguas indígenas brasileiras. 2019 foi o Ano Internacional das Línguas Indígenas e devido ao grande sucesso desse chamado à ação, no início de 2020, a Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas aprovou a declaração da Década Internacional das Línguas Indígenas (2022 - 2032). Como nós, pesquisadores que estamos na academia, vamos responder a esse chamado? Este texto é um con…

  • Why minimal multiple rules provide a unique window into UG and L2

    Open Access•Luiz Amaral, Thomas Roeper et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This article clarifies some ideas presented in this issue’s keynote article (Amaral and Roeper, this issue) and discusses several issues raised by the contributors’ comments on the nature of the Multiple Grammars (MG) theory. One of the key goals of the article is to unequivocally state that MG is not a parametric theory and that its current version follows very explicit minimalist assumptions. We also refine the notion of ‘minimal multiple rules…

  • Multiple Grammars and Second Language Representation

    Open Access•Luiz Amaral, Thomas Roeper et al.•ARTICLE•Second language Research•2014•Cited by: 21•References: 9

This paper presents an extension of the Multiple Grammars Theory (Roeper, 1999) to provide a formal mechanism that can serve as a generative-based alternative to current descriptive models of interlanguage. The theory extends historical work by Kroch and Taylor (1997), and has been taken into a computational direction by Yang (2003). The proposal is based on the idea that any human grammar readily accommodates sets of rules in sub-grammars that c…
