  • Refurnishing Homes in a Bombed City

    Open Access•Suzanne Reimer, Philip Pinch•ARTICLE•The London Journal•2021

The London Blitz was a catalyst for national state control of the entire commodity network for furniture; the only wartime commodity for which this was done. The Utility furniture scheme sought to manage material shortages and combat profiteering in the markets for new and second-hand furniture. It also responded to the vulnerability of the nation’s furniture producers, which were disproportionately concentrated in and around London. Set against …

  • Sites of qualification

    Open Access•Suzanne Reimer, Philip Pinch•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 34

The paper mobilises the distinctive notion of ‘sites of qualification’ as a means of providing an expansive understanding of how innovative products are designed, produced and brought to consumer markets. We focus on the development of a new safety product for motorcyclists, the rider airbag, in which inflatable body protection is either incorporated into, or worn underneath, textile jackets and leather suits. The paper follows the airbag’s traje…

  • Geographies of the British government’s wartime Utility furniture scheme, 1940–1945

Open Access•Suzanne Reimer, Philip Pinch•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Geography•2012

The Second World War Utility furniture scheme represented a distinctive moment in the changing geographies of the twentieth-century British furniture industry. The scheme enabled the British state to direct the entire furniture commodity chain, from the regulation of timber supplies through to the management of final consumption. Whilst there has been some discussion of Utility within the context of modernism in design, the paper explores the bro…

  • Moto-mobilities

    Philip Pinch, Suzanne Reimer•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2012•Cited by: 20•References: 56

This paper draws upon and seeks to extend accounts of systems of automobility through an examination of geographies of the motorcycle and motorcyclist – or what we term ‘moto-mobilities’. We utilize the figure of the motorcycle to raise the importance of analysing alternative mobilities: to consider how they appeal to different travelling dispositions and emotions; how they have been represented; and how they have been produced, marketed and cons…

  • Hollowing out' the Local State

Open Access•Anthony Patterson, Philip Pinch et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1995•Cited by: 10•References: 23

The process of compulsory competitive tendering (CCT) for the provision of local-government services has forced significant changes to the way in which such services have been provided, whether such services have been contracted out or remain in-house, and has spawned a considerable literature on the impact of these changes on the quality, reach, and cost of public services. The primary focus of this literature has been on service users (or 'cons…

  • Governing Urban Finance

    Open Access•Philip Pinch, P L Pinch•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1995•Cited by: 3•References: 27

The restructuring of local government finance in Britain is increasingly being viewed as part and parcel of a broader transformation in the capacity for local welfare provision and scope of local governance. The ways in which local authority budgetary processes and strategies have been affected by these changes are examined. It is suggested that, despite strong elements of continuity, significant new developments in local budgeting behaviour are …
