  • Land use transformations and tenure conflicts in the Cerrado-Caatinga frontier: Evidence from Piauí, Brazil

Open Access•Giovana Mira De Espindola, Gilberto Câmara et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2026

  • Impact of land tenure on deforestation control and forest restoration in Brazilian Amazonia

Open Access•Gilberto Câmara, Rolf Simões et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

This study examines how land tenure constrains Brazil’s ability to meet its deforestation control and forest restoration goals in its Amazonia biome. Our findings are based on an updated assessment of land tenure and land use in the region. Between 2019 and 2021, 44% of deforestation in Amazonia occurred in private lands, while forest removal in settlements ranged from 31% to 27% of the total. Deforestation in undesignated public lands increased …

  • Ten facts about land systems for sustainability

Open Access•Patrick Meyfroidt, Ariane De Bremond et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2022

Land use is central to addressing sustainability issues, including biodiversity conservation, climate change, food security, poverty alleviation, and sustainable energy. In this paper, we synthesize knowledge accumulated in land system science, the integrated study of terrestrial social-ecological systems, into 10 hard truths that have strong, general, empirical support. These facts help to explain the challenges of achieving sustainability in la…

  • Environmental vulnerability assessment of Brazilian Amazon Indigenous Lands

    Open Access•Ana Claudia Rorato Vitor, Ana C Rorato et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 20

Amazonian Indigenous Lands (ILs) are human-environment systems facing a multitude of environmental threats. Yet, the resulting vulnerability of these systems are to date unknown. We adopt the theoretical vulnerability framework of the IPCC to assess the environmental vulnerability of Brazilian Amazon ILs for two periods (2001–2010 and 2011–2019) and overall (2001–2019). Vulnerability is deemed a function of exposure (EX), sensitivity (SE) and ada…

  • Brazilian amazon indigenous peoples threatened by mining bill

Open Access•Ana Claudia Rorato Vitor, Gilberto Câmara et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

The Brazilian Amazon has the highest concentration of indigenous peoples in the world. Recently, the Brazilian government sent a bill to Congress to regulate commercial mining in indigenous lands. This work analyzes the risks of the proposed mining bill to Amazonian indigenous peoples and their lands. To evaluate the possible impact of the new mining bill, we consider all mining license requests registered in Brazil’s National Mining Agency that …

  • Future environmental and agricultural impacts of Brazil’s Forest Code

Open Access•Aline C Soterroni, Aline Mosnier et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

The role of improving the enforcement of Brazil's Forest Code in reducing deforestation in the Amazon has been highlighted in many studies. However, in a context of strong political pressure for loosening environmental protections, the future impacts of a nationwide implementation of the Forest Code on both environment and agriculture remain poorly understood. Here, we present a spatially explicit assessment of Brazil's 2012 Forest Code through t…

    Open Access•Karla Donato Fook, Silvana Amaral et al.•ARTICLE•Sociedade & natureza•2009•References: 2

  • Making species distribution models available on the web for reuse in biodiversity experiments: Euterpe edulis species case study

    Open Access•Karla Donato Fook, Silvana Amaral et al.•ARTICLE•Sociedade & natureza•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Currently, biodiversity conservation is one of the most urgent and important themes. Biodiversity researchers use species distribution models to make inferences about species occurrences and locations. These models are fundamental for fauna and flora preservation, as well as for decision making processes for urban and regional planning and development. Species distribution modelling tools use large biodiversity datasets which are globally distrib…

  • Mapeamento do risco de homicídio com base na co-krigeagem binomial e simulação: Um estudo de caso para São Paulo, Brasil

Open Access•Eduardo Celso Gerbi Camargo, Suzana Druck et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 17

  • Efficient regionalization techniques for socio‐economic geographical units using minimum spanning trees

    Renato Assunção, R M AssunÇão et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006

Regionalization is a classification procedure applied to spatial objects with an areal representation, which groups them into homogeneous contiguous regions. This paper presents an efficient method for regionalization. The first step creates a connectivity graph that captures the neighbourhood relationship between the spatial objects. The cost of each edge in the graph is inversely proportional to the similarity between the regions it joins. We s…

  • Geocomputation techniques for spatial analysis: Are They Relevant to Health Data

Open Access•Gilberto Câmara, Antonio Miguel Vieira Monteiro•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Geocomputation is an emerging field of research that advocates the use of computationally intensive techniques such as neural networks, heuristic search, and cellular automata for spatial data analysis. Since increasing amounts of health-related data are collected within a geographical frame of reference, geocomputational methods show increasing potential for health data analysis. This paper presents a brief survey of the geocomputational field, …
