    This article examines the impact of social policies on the living conditions of poor families-particularly women-in Latin America from the late 1980s to the present. It identifies three distinct trends of familialism in the region's social protection systems.     The term cosmopolitanism, literally “citizen of the cosmos,” was first employed by the Cynics in the fourth century BC and was later taken up by the Stoics of Rome. The notion was resuscitated in the eighteenth century — Immanuel Kant understood it as both hospitality and the universal extension of reason and freedom.     This article interrogates the devotional histories and archival evidence related to Our Lady of Angels in Tecaxic and Tlatelolco. Both Marian paintings survived lengthy periods of neglect and dilapidated shrines.     One of the most persistent negative cultural stereotypes in the West is purveyed by the myth known as the “Spanish Black Legend,” a form of orientalism and anti-Semitism that portrays Spaniards as uniquely brutal and greedy, assigning to them the role of “the other” traditionally held by Muslims and Jews.
