Effects of a 12-week increased hip flexion gait exercise intervention in individuals with obesity and knee osteoarthritis: A randomized crossover feasibility study
Introduction The novel increased hip flexion gait (HFgait) exercise modality involves specific neuromuscular and biomechanical characteristics that might be beneficial for individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The current study examined the efficacy and feasibility of a 12-week HFgait exercise program in patients with obesity and symptomatic knee OA. Methods Double-arm crossover design with three timepoint measurements. Twelve participants (…
Clinical Thresholds for Visceral Adiposity Accumulation: A Comparative Analysis in Sex‐, Age‐, and BMI ‐Matched Black and White Adults
Objectives This study aimed to prospectively identify visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation thresholds in a cohort of sex‐, age‐, and BMI‐matched non‐Hispanic White and Black adults using a range of commonly employed whole‐body and abdominal‐specific adiposity measures associated with chronic disease risk. Methods A total of 344 non‐Hispanic White ( n = 172) and Black adults ( n = 172) matched for sex, age, and BMI completed anthropometric a…

Analysis of Organic Residues in the Context of the Middle Bronze Age in the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula: The Case of the Cova Da Moura Funerary Monument (Viana Do Castelo, Nw Portugal)
This paper presents and discusses the results of chromatographic analyses conducted on the contents of a ceramic pot recovered from Cova da Moura, a coastal funerary context located on the western slope of the Serra de Santa Luzia in Carreço, within the municipality and district of Viana do Castelo, Northwest Portugal. The site was excavated in 1931 by Abel Viana, who uncovered a monument beneath a tumulus that concealed a cluster of granite outc…
Exploring gait velocity as a predictor of cardiometabolic disease risk in young adults
Background The association between poor gait and functional movement ability and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been well established in older adults. A continuous cardiometabolic risk score, MetS index , may more easily identify individuals at risk for cardiometabolic disease who do not yet meet the stringent criteria for a formal MetS diagnosis. Although the association between MetS and gait velocity is well established in older adults, no such …
Roman-indigenous interaction in the Salas River valley (Northwest Iberia): The Roman camp of Alto da Raia and its archaeological landscape
This paper discusses the archaeological research and historical contextualisation of the Alto da Raia enclosure located on the border between northern Portugal and Galicia, identified as a possible Roman camp, following an interdisciplinary and multi-proxy approach. This included archaeological excavation, remote sensing and geophysical survey, as well as sample collection for archaeobotanical and geochemical studies by means of chemical and mine…
Theory Building, Case Dependence, and Researchers' Bounded Rationality: An Illustration From Studies of Innovation Diffusion
Researchers increasingly take advantage of the comparative case design to build theory, but the degree of case dependence is occasionally discussed and theorized. We suggest that the comparative case study design might be subject to an often underappreciated threat-dependence across cases-under certain conditions. Using research on innovation diffusion as an illustration, we explore the role of social linkages across cases when building theory th…
Governing diversity: A comparative analysis of pragmatic diversity regimes in city centres
This article examines how cultural diversity is incorporated into processes of urban renewal, creating images of the city, and considering local governance actors and strategies. It adopts the concept of diversity regimes to compare the two major cities in Portugal. The two cases studied here demonstrate the multiplicity of strategies employed to accommodate immigration and cultural diversity in local political action, but where city policy is in…

Integrating superdiversity in urban governance: The case of inner-city Lisbon
This paper analyses how urban governance incorporated migration-driven superdiversity combining cultural and economic development policies. We use the case of Mouraria, a Lisbon neighbourhood, as a site where city strategies accommodate old and new diversities to render a cosmopolitan sense associated to a ‘diversity advantage’ approach. We identify three strategies shaping urban governance: de-ethnicisation of superdiversity and urban growth pol…
Fronteiras coletivas e repertórios étnorraciais no Brasil contemporâneo
The article argues that ethnic policy in Brazil has changed in such a way as to adopt more assertive concepts of group belonging. Analysing affirmative action in favour of Black people in contemporary Brazil, the article discusses three differentiated repertoires with implications for the construction of collective boundaries of an ethnoracial nature, which the author calls dilution, negotiation and salience. These frameworks make it possible to …

Do Multiculturalismo Ao Interculturalismo.
Prime…
Implementing training in Portuguese for Speakers of Other Languages in Portugal: The case of adult immigrants with little or no schooling
Courses in Portuguese for Speakers of Other Languages, in particular for adult immigrants, have been steadily expanding in Portugal over the last 15 years. These programmes aim to promote educational and labour market integration, access to Portuguese nationality, and cognitive development. This paper argues that official Portuguese learning policies have mainly targeted a population with an immigrant background that fails to represent the full r…
Between Scylla and Charybdis: Margaret Archer’s social realism
This article aims to compare Archer’s theoretical proposals with those of Giddens or, more precisely, to read Giddens through Archer and vice versa, in a deliberate dialogical attempt that never reaches — and never tries to reach — a synthesis. It is intended, through this comparison, to cast light on certain logical articulations between the two paradigms that may delineate the strengths and weaknesses of social realism as conceived by Archer. F…
