  • The Minor Variant of Hebrews 2.9, with Mark 15.34 and Psalm 22.2

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2024

This article explores the relationship of a minor variant in Hebrews 2.9 – Jesus dead ‘apart from God’ (χωρὶς θɛοῦ) – with the minor variant of Mark 15.34 and more broadly with Psalm 22.2, as suggested by Harnack, Michel, Zuntz, Elliott, Ehrman and Rodgers. First, it highlights new elements in the file of the evidence of Heb 2.9 and compares it with the case of Mark 15.34. Secondly, it demonstrates that paying attention to the minor variants of H…

  • Lost in Translation? The Odyssey of “Digital Humanities” in French

    Claire Clivaz•ARTICLE•Istoriya•2020

By examining the case of the French translation of the expression “digital humanities” (DH), this article argues that cultural diversity and multilingualism could be fostered in digital culture. At first glance, the international success of this expression seems to contradict this statement: isn’t it a clear example of English language domination over other Western and non-Western languages? Used in written form for the first time in 2004, tirele…

  • Between Canonical and Apocryphal Texts

Jörg Röder, Claire Clivaz et al.•BOOK•Between Canonical and Apocryphal…•2019

How do apocryphal texts rewrite and reinterpret traditions from earlier, authoritative texts? The volume compares processes of reception and interpretation in early Jewish and early Christian literature. It includes detailed studies on the LXX, Qumran texts and Jewish Pseudepigrapha as well as early apocryphal Gospel traditions, Apocryphal Acts and Pseudo-Apostolic Letters.

  • Between Canonical to Apocryphal Texts

Jörg Frey, Jörg Röder et al.•BOOK•Between Canonical to Apocryphal…•2019

The present volume aims at a comparative study of the processes of reception, rewriting and interpretation between canonical and apocryphal texts in early Jewish and early Christian literature. A closer look at the respective developments in both corpora of literature can open up new perspectives for understanding the developments and changes between texts that were already considered authoritative, and their reception in new, 'parabiblical' or '…

  • The Digital Humanities in Biblical Studies and Theology

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz, Garrick V Allen•ARTICLE•Open Theology•2019

This special issue of Open Theology dedicated to digital humanities (DH) belongs to, and in many ways represents, a new step in the digital development of biblical studies and theology -the start of a general diffusion of digital research, digital tools, and digital culture in theology. This new step has come to the fore through the recent publication of books like Networked Theology (Campbell and Garner 2016) and Creating Church Online (Hutching…

  • The Impact of Digital Research

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz•ARTICLE•Open Theology•2019

This article presents the challenges of developing Humanities research in a digital environment in relation to a New Testament test-case: the MARK16 project. The first section argues that virtual research environments (VREs) have become an excellent milieu in which to develop a digitized research project based on collaborative work. The second section presents an overview of VREs and digital projects on the New Testament. The third section demons…

  • Ecritures digitales

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz•BOOK•Ecritures digitales•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Ecritures digitales aims to demonstrate how digital writing contributes to the emergence of "a new relationship between the human body and the machine" as Jacques Derrida proposed when he considered the effects of new technologies. This reconfigured relationship, not surprisingly, is also influencing the digital future of the Jewish-Christian textual corpus referred to as "the Scriptures". The French title brings together this duality in one expr…

  • Apocryphal Texts about Other Characters in the Canonical Gospels

Charlotte Touati, Claire Clivaz•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Early…•2016

This chapter focuses on characters that may be considered to play secondary or minor roles in canonical gospels, but are often prominent figures in non-canonical texts: Mary the mother of Jesus, Joseph the father of Jesus, the Magi, John the Baptist and his father Zechariah, Mary Magdalene, Pontius Pilate. Stories about these characters shed light on theological developments that are reflected in other early Christian texts. These developments in…

  • On the Source and Rewriting of 1 Corinthians 2.9 in Christian, Jewish and Islamic Traditions ( 1 Clem 34.8; GosJud 47.10–13; a ḥadīth qudsī )

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz, Sara Schulthess•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2015

The article reopens the dossier of the sources, parallels and rewritings of 1 Cor 2.9, a saying that Paul attributes to a written source, when other sources put it into Jesus' mouth (e.g. GosThom 17). The state of research shows that the hypothesis of an oral source is generally preferred but an accurate study of 1 Clem 34.8, a parallel too often neglected, supports the presence of a written source that existed before 1 Cor 2.9. GosJud 47.10–13 w…

  • New Testament in a Digital Culture

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion Media and…•2014

The digital revolution makes one attentive to a “blind spot” of modernity, the influence of the material support of writing on ideas and concepts. Modernity has led us to “believe” in the existence of “works” and “ideas” independently of their concrete expressions in the supports of writing. Such beliefs have deeply influenced modern methodologies, and among them the biblical methodological approaches. The digital revolution reminds one to take a…

The special issue attempts to understand what happens to cultures whose expression was linked to the written word and the book by Western modernity. It looks at what is happening to the humanities with digitization and what is happening to the relationship between the humanities and the sociomaterial practices that shaped knowledge and culture. It proposes to reflect on the usual categories of 'book' and 'outside the book' cultures, how they have…

  • Digital religion out of the book

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz•ARTICLE•Scripta Instituti Donneriani…•2013

Since the classical age, a detailed knowledge of philology and critical editions of textshave been developed in the field of ancient Greek texts. This knowledge is at risk today because the new digital support draws new parameters for texts and textuality itself. The gradual disappearance of the notion of the ‘original text’ and the undermining of the philological approach is tinged with nostalgia for all scholars whose roots are in classical, ph…

  • Infancy Gospels

Andreas Dettwiler, Claire Clivaz et al.•BOOK•Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen…•2011

Often considered as popular literature, the Infancy Gospels on Jesus birth and childhood have been neglected in research during the last decades due to the relatively late date of their redaction. In this volume, an international team of scholars proposes a reconsideration of the historical background of these stories in terms of early Jewish and Christian identity quests.

Even though the canonical Jesus' infancy stories have always provoked great interest in popular culture and in the arts, they have been neglected in research during the last decades due to the relatively late date of their redaction. Since the monograph by Raymond Brown, The Birth of the Messiah , the researchers working on this topic have not attempted to consider its historical impact. In this volume, an international team of scholars proposes …

    Open Access•Claire Clivaz•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2005

Eldon J. Epp recently asserted that “the greater the ambiguity in the variant readings in a given variation unit, the more clearly we are able to grasp the concerns of the early church.” I agree with this principle and submit that the famous text-critical problem regarding the authenticity of Luke 22:43–44—the agony of Jesus on the Mount of Olives, which mentions the angel and the sweat “like drops of blood”—has not yet yielded its store of infor…
