    Open Access•Oumar Kane•ARTICLE•Tic & société•2023

This paper analyzes the proliferation of memes linked to COVID-19 and climate change online discussions, looking particularly at how themes related to these two issues intersect with each other. To better understand the intersections, cross-pollinations, and mutations between these different but related forms of information dissemination, our research is based on applied thematic analysis and empirically analyzes memes deployed through two popula…

  • Topic modelling of public Twitter discourses, part bot, part active human user, on climate change and global warming

Open Access•Dionel Barbosa, Oumar Kane et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Media•2021

Twitter is a key site for understanding the highly polarized and politicized debate around climate change. We examined large datasets comprising about 15 million tweets from different parts of the world referencing climate change and global warming. Our examination of the twenty most active users employing the term ‘global warming’ are likely to be automated accounts or bots than the most active users employing the term ‘climate change’. We used …

    Open Access•A Al-Rawi, Derrick OʼKeefe et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2021

In this empirical study, we collected about 6.8 million tweets that mentioned “fake news”, and we extracted references to climate change and/or global warming to understand the public discourses around these two issues. Using a mixed method, the study’s findings show that there is a clear politically polarized discussion on climate change. We found that the majority of tweets focus on the United States context though references to other Western c…

  • La science du climat au prisme de la culture

Open Access•Oumar Kane, Alexia Pilon Diabaté et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Communication•2021

Background:In recent decades, climate has become one of the most hotly contested issues in relation to the ecological crisis. It encompasses challenges of such magnitude that “climate change” on its own has almost come to constitute a multidisciplinary area of research where scholarly and popular discourses interact forcefully. Analysis:This article uses both symbolic-religious and ethical frameworks to describe a sample of scientific articles on…

• Communication studies, disciplination and the ontological stakes of interdisciplinarity

    Open Access•Oumar Kane•ARTICLE•Communication & Society•2016

Building on an in-depth analysis of the core literature grappling with the philosophical problematization of communication, this article examines the oft-asserted interdisciplinary nature of communication studies by assessing some of its underlying presuppositions at the ontological and epistemological levels. The article evaluates the coherence of our fragmented discipline through the articulation of the categories of the One and the Multiple in…

  • Les technologies numériques au prisme des approches critiques

Open Access•E George, Oumar Kane•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Communication•2015

In this article, the authors show the relevance of a dialogue between several critical perspectives in order to properly analyse the digital information and communications technology (ICT). If the political economy of communication is relevant to highlight the inequalities and power relations in the organization of communication systems, this approach is limited when it comes to taking into account the autonomy of the social agents. They propose …

The formalization of “holy books” and the definition of “communities of believers” are the objects of struggles that are both material and symbolic. This article begins by presenting three categories of signs: written (holy books), oral (esoteric initiations) and pictorial (religious icons). It then identifies the idea of community as well as t…
