Development and validity evidence for the probabilistic reasoning test in undergraduate medical students
BACKGROUND: Script Concordance Tests (SCT) are widely used to assess clinical reasoning in medical education, but their use in high-stakes examinations raises concerns related to ambiguity, reliance on expert panels, and limited acceptability among students. To address these issues, we developed the Probabilistic Reasoning Test (PRT), a simplified format designed to assess normative probabilistic reasoning within clinical scenarios using a single…
Actions menées en Unité d’enseignement ( ue ) tsa pour développer « le pouvoir d’apprendre »
L’observation du niveau de langage pour des adolescents porteurs de tsa montre la nécessité d’améliorer leurs moyens de communication. Preventive detention monitoring is effective: A case study on isolation of children and young people in the Australian Capital Territory
This article addresses the role of detention monitoring in preventing ill-treatment of detained children and young people, focusing on the use of isolation. It discusses learnings from the Australian Capital Territory’s Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services (OICS) pilot National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) visit to the Bimberi Youth Justice Centre in 2023. This visit was in accordance with OICS’ designation as an NPM (domestic torture prev…

Violence in the Lives of Incarcerated Aboriginal Mothers in Western Australia
Drawing on in-depth interviews with incarcerated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers in Western Australia, we report on the women's use of violence in their relationships with others. Results reinforce that Aboriginal women are overwhelmingly victims of violence; however, many women report also using violence, primarily as a strategy to deal with their own high levels of victimization. The "normalization" of violence in their lives and …

Incidence of primary hepatitis C infection and risk factors for transmission in an Australian prisoner cohort
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common in prisoner populations, particularly those with a history of injecting drug use (IDU). Previous studies of HCV incidence have been based on small case numbers and have not distinguished risk events in prison from those in the community. HCV incidence was examined in a longitudinal cohort of 488 Australian prisoners with a history of IDU and documented to be seronegative within 12 months prior to enrolm…

Giafferi-Dombre, Natacha.

Drug Use and Its Correlates in an Australian Prisoner Population
The prevalence of past and present tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use is examined in a cross sectional random sample of prisoners. 789 male and female prisoners from 27 correctional centres across New South Wales (NSW) participated in the survey. Information was collected using a face-to-face interview on community and prison drug use, and intoxication while offending. Current tobacco use was reported by 72% of the sample. Use of alcohol by f…

Overwhelming Consumption in Prisons: Human Rights and Tuberculosis Control
Tuberculosis is thought to be the single biggest cause of death among the world's prisoners, but a human rights approach to tuberculosis control has not yet been applied. We propose that existing guidelines for the control of HIV be adapted and applied to tuberculosis. Tuberculosis control in prisons provides a platform to develop these concepts
Computer-Assisted Language Learning: Context and Conceptualization
So far the development of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has been fragmented. The points of departure for CALL projects have been enormously varied, and when the projects have been written up, they rarely refer to those that have gone before. Michael Levy addresses this shortcoming, setting CALL work into a context, both historical and interdisciplinary. He is the first person in the field to consider CALL as a body of work. He also a…
El control de la tuberculosis en refugiados y desplazados
As a result of national and international conflicts, the number of refugees and displaced persons in various countries of the world is increasing. The complex and protracted nature of these conflicts often forces refugees to remain away from their countries for long periods, living in refugee camps. Many refugees come from countries where tuberculosis is endemic and, once the immediate problems of establishing a camp are overcome, this disease be…
Neurological Comorbidity in Treatment-Resistant Dual Diagnosis Patients
This paper discusses the possible role of neurological dysfunction in the frequent treatment-resistance of dual diagnosis patients. Through case vignettes, the complex treatment process of three dual diagnosis patients is presented. Each case demonstrates how in addition to both psychiatric and substance abuse problems, the patients also experienced neurological difficulties that made treatment even more complicated. The authors suggest that trea…

A Psychometric Assessment of a Scale to Measure Organizational Fairness
Equity theory posits that an individual perceives equity or inequity in a work situation on the basis of organizational fairness. The concept of organizational fairness is a multidimensional construct that has evolved from research directed at developing measures and identifying dimensions of perceived equity. This paper presents the results of an empirical assessment of the psychometric properties of a scale designed to measure organizational fa…
Pain Control Research in the Terminally ILL
The realities of clinical practice as well as the intricacies of basic science must be taken into account by future research into pain control for the terminally ill. Attention is also needed to the integration of various approaches to pain control in order to develop the best possible treatment plan for each individual. An encouraging development in this regard is the rapid growth of interdisciplinary pain clinics and hospice programs. A review …
Racial differences in hemodynamic responses to the cold face stimulus in children and adults
The prevalence of essential hypertension is higher among blacks than whites. One reason for this difference may be that blacks are more reactive to stressors that produce vasoconstrictive responses. Two studies were conducted to test this hypothesis, one with 10- to 14-year-old males (20 whites, 20 blacks) and one with young adult males (10 whites, 10 blacks). Subjects had blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, and total peripheral resistanc…

The Disease Controversy and Psychotherapy with Alcoholics
This article discusses conducting psychotherapy with alcoholics in light of the controversy about whether alcoholism is a disease. The belief that alcoholism is a disease forces many clinicians to offer abstinence from alcohol as the only option for alcoholics who seek treatment. From this perspective, the alcoholic must be helped to accept the idea that he or she has a disease and that to recover from this problem, drinking must stop. Others mai…
Ethnicity, family history of hypertension and patterns of hemodynamic reactivity in boys
This study compared blood pressure, heart rate, stroke volume, vascular resistance, and cardiac output responses to a video game challenge and forehead cold stressor in 6- to 15-year-old males who varied in ethnicity and family history of essential hypertension. Controlling for age, significant baseline differences were obtained with black boys exhibiting higher systolic and diastolic pressures than their white cohorts. Positive family history ch…
A Neuropsychological Perspective on Dual Diagnosis
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients experiencing both a major psychiatric disorder and a concurrent substance abuse problem (dual diagnosis) manifest greater neuropsychological dysfunctions than patients experiencing a major psychiatric disorder alone. Differences in diagnostic variability and fluidity between dual diagnosis and non-dual diagnosis patients and the occurrence of polysubstance abuse among the dual diagnosi…
