  • Polyphonic Disconcert around Polygyny

Open Access•Catarina Isabel Caldeira Martins, Catarina Martins•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2015

This article intends to offer a feminist reading of two novels written by African women on the subject of polygyny. Other novels will be drawn into the discussion, in order to demonstrate how polyphony as an aesthetical strategy corresponds to a political intention of making as many voices of women as possible heard on the subject. A simplistic reading of polygyny as always merely oppressive to women, as opposed to monogamy as a desirable norm, i…

  • How Many People Have You Killed

Open Access•Catarina Isabel Caldeira Martins, Catarina Martins•ARTICLE•Cahiers d études africaines•2013

This article will comparatively examine representations of child-soldiers in literary and cinematographic works from the North and the South, using post-colonial theory in an attempt to ascertain which power politics might be at play in the dominant northern discoursive construction of the issue, and which the focuses of resistance within a counter-discourse coming from the South are. I will also consider the way in which the southern counter-dis…

This article deals with the heuristic potentials of the documentary film Children’s Parks in the historical and visual treatment of educational subjects and objects. We will choose specific moments in the film in order to discuss theoretical and methodological questions implied in the relationship between images and words, aiming to understand how pictorial meaning is connected to the production of specific kinds of subjectivities. Each section w…

  • Indisciplines of inquiry

Helena Cabeleira, Catarina Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2011

The starting point for this article is a film about Scottish education, Children’s Story. Children’s Story was one of a group of seven documentaries made for the 1938 British Empire Exhibition in Glasgow, under the supervision of John Grierson. The film was an official entry into the Exhibition and is a formal display of key ideas and elements of Scottish education – past, present and (especially) future. The film will be used to raise questions …

  • The dangers of the single story

Open Access•Catarina Isabel Caldeira Martins, Catarina Martins•ARTICLE•Childhood•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Focusing on the paradox between innocence and responsibility generated by the term child-soldiers, which is treated differently in literary and cinematographic works from the North and the South, this article uses postcolonial theory in order to deconstruct 'the single story' that may be erasing these children's many stories. Accordingly, the analysis brings to the fore both the supposed universality of a hegemonic notion of childhood, revealing …

Open Access•Catarina Isabel Caldeira Martins, Catarina Martins•ARTICLE•Revista crítica de ciências…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 1
