Social movements and the circulation of agroecology in Madrid’s policy and sociopolitical landscapes
The policy mobilities framework aims to understand the things, spaces, moments and people that contribute to the diffuse, non-linear and power-laden processes involved in the circulation and mobilization of ideas in cities. Recent contributions work to strengthen the framework’s ability to capture the role of social movements and civil society members therein, notably when it comes to the mobilities of counterhegemonic ideas. Here, we investigate…
It's time for the community to really get off the ground”: Insights of key actors on energy transition in Nunavik Inuit communities
Isolated and remote Indigenous communities of the Arctic are going through an energy transition that has several special features, shaped by the local and national context and self-determination aspirations. As of today, the opposing and congruent positions, visions, and experiences of the different organizations involved in the energy transition remain unclear, complicating the elaboration of adapted policies. In this work, 24 persons from 15 or…

Resilient climate urbanism and the politics of experimentation for adaptation
Cities are increasingly pursuing actions to become more resilient in the face of climate change and to seize related economic growth opportunities. Recent contributions have argued that “climate urbanism” is emerging as a hegemonic trend that is structuring climate adaptation with a focus on the selective securing of vital infrastructure for growth, promoting an apolitical vision of resilience and exacerbating inequalities. Developing situated un…

Getting Lost Through the Relational Mail Art of Art/Re-search (T)here: A Decolonizing Methodology
Art/Re-search (T)here is a SSHRC-funded project that creates new understandings of art, research and decolonized processes amongst theories of knowledge. The relational mail art of Art/Re-search (T)here unfolds through post theories of the (post)qualitative posthumanist philosophies and decolonized practices. These disruptive co-compositions happen by getting lost through thing-power, and through the decolonial project of re-turning to the dynami…

Collective urban gardens: Growing, learning and fostering social engagement
Scholars have recently worked to broaden the definition of urban engagement in order to better understand the multiple manifestations of this concept. Some, interested in grasping the potential transformative or demonstrative effects of everyday actions in urban settings, have examined active practices, such as gardening. Others have focused on the scale of action and have demonstrated how limited activities can have significant effects on indivi…

Renewable Energy as a Catalyst for Equity? Integrating Inuit Interests With Nunavik Energy Planning
Nunavik’s residents experience significant social and environmental disruptions due to climate change. These disruptions add to the widespread changes that the Inuit have encountered over the last century—changes that have left this community totally dependent on fossil fuels for heat and power. Over time, Nunavik’s residents have taken control of petroleum resources and their distribution, transforming this energy source into a major regional ec…
Building territorial value within local circular economy’s projects: Lessons from French scholars’ studies
This contribution proposes an introduction to the concept of territorial value used by French-speaking researchers to analyse the benefits of circular economy (CE)’s projects. For several years, French-speaking researchers have been highlighting the emergence of a new form of value in the CE’s implementation. This so-called territorial value is associated with the mobilisation of heterogeneous actors (industrial, institutional, associative, etc.)…
Citizen participation at the micro-community level: The case of the green alley projects in Quebec City
Contesting the greening of the urban growth machine: Ecological modernization and the promethean counter-discourse
Urban environmental governance and planning are increasingly characterized by the adoption of "sustainability fixes," namely political compromises which try to conciliate economic and ecological goals in order to safeguard long-term growth. If sustainability fixes have been harshly criticized for being sociospatially selective, resistance to them does not always come from radical groups who demand stronger and fairer measures, but from actors who…
Monitoring the evolution of individuals’ flood-related adaptive behaviors over time: Two cross-sectional surveys conducted in the Province of Quebec, Canada
Climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and intensity of floods in the province of Quebec, Canada. Therefore, in 2015, to better monitor the level of adaptation to flooding of Quebec residents living in or near a flood-prone area, the Quebec Observatory of Adaptation to Climate Change developed five indices of adaptation to flooding, according to the chronology of events. The present study was conducted 4 years later and is a follow…

Scoping review of the impacts of urban agriculture on the determinants of health
More peer-reviewed studies are needed in areas where UA is practiced such as Latin America and Caribbean. The inconsistency and the lack of strong quality in the methodology of the included studies are proof that more rigorous studies are also needed in future research. Nevertheless, the substantial existing evidence from this review corroborate that UA can influence different determinants of health such as food security, social capital, health a…
