Introduction à la géographie humaine

Marginality and centrality
Changing Cities: Restructuring, Marginality and Policies in Urban Europe
This paper outlines the main trends of urban change in contemporary Europe and indicates theoretical approaches which can be used to analyse and under stand them. Three main questions are considered: the link between economic restructuring and urban and regional change; the interactions between urban policy responses and restructuring; and the conse quences of these changes for patterns of marginality in Europe
Images of francophone countries and francophone images of the world
A sample of mental maps of the world drawn by first-year geography students of eight Francophone countries reflects their variations in geography education. In several countries the geography students are unable to place 30 countries on their Sketch maps ofthe world! The Francophone nations are not seen as the most important, for several large and wellknown countries appear more frequently than most Francophone countries on the sketch maps ofthe …
An Econometric Model of Socio‐spatial Development of Tourist Regions. The Case of the Swiss Canton of Valais
Like all human activities, tourism reflects the social and cultural values of an epoch. The relative lack of quantitative modelling in tourism research shows the need to develop theoretical models, using the contributions of behavioural geography and psychological analysis. A generalized Lotka‐Volterra system is then applied to a case study, the Swiss canton of Valais, to show potential applications in spatial planning

Spatial imaginary and geography: A plea for the geography of representations
Producer Services and Systems of Flexible Production
During the decade of the 1980s, regional science began to devote more and more attention to the influence of two phenomena upon the structure and functioning of the space-economy: (1) service activities, in general, and producer services, in particular, and (2) flexible production systems. This paper explores the extent to which these two major preoccupations of contemporary regional science can be integrated, and attempts to contribute to the un…
Producer Services and Flexible Production: An Exploratory Analysis
While the flexible production literature has become increasingly abundant in recent years, the vast majority of it is narrowly restricted to manufacturing activities, entirely ignoring the role that producer services play in modern systems of production. This paper attempts to explore the conceptual linkages between the growth and the location of producer services, on the one hand, and the rise of flexible forms of production, on the other. After…
Service Activities and the Evolution of Production Systems: An International Comparison
Modern production systems are characterized by an increasing interdependence between services and the production of goods. The nature of such systems cannot be adequately represented by traditional economic typologies that are based upon the 'product' of a sector, and that accentuate the distinction between the manufacture of goods and the production of services. The interdependence between goods and services is explored and a more appropriate ty…

Service Activities and Regional Development: Some European Examples
Two general issues relating to the nature of the service sector are addressed in this paper. The first concerns the growing interdependence between the secondary and tertiary sectors, largely a function of the increased use of service functions in the manufacturing process; these service inputs may be either internalized or externalized by a manufacturing firm. The second issue concerns the role of the service sector in promoting regional economi…

La perception des paysages urbains.: Essai méthodologique
The perception of urban landscapes. Methodological essay. The ecological approach to the study of the urban community in the 1920s is already concerned with the complex problem of the mental maps that people hold of their environment. According to the sector theory, advanced by H. Hoyt, urban society is stratified into a system of socio-economic classes where residents perceive the various parts of the city in a similar way. Recent researches sho…

Reading the territory : towards a regional geography aware of our daily life. — This paper deals with a new conception of regional geography integrating behavioural and humanistic approaches. If we want to understand the sense of place and the roots of human practices, we need to be more open to intuition, to the links between signifier and signified and to the symbolics aspects of our daily life.

Une Géo-politique de la Regio Genevensis
The Franco-Geneva region has been a pioneer region since the establishment of a "Transborder Commission" in 1973 which deals with international problems. One of the most important results of this international Cooperation was a financial agreement. 3.5% of the wages earned by the French frontaliers working in the Canton of Geneva are redistributed to French regional authorities. The total amount which was 10 million Swiss francs (for 25 000 worke…
