Komunyakaa, Collaboration, and the Wishbone: An Interview
Fine Men from Afar’: Cricket and Empire on the Home Front
During the Second World War, contrary to enduring images of bombardment and scarcity, people on Britain's ‘Home Front’ continued to take part in a broad array of sporting activities. Cricket played a more significant role in the wartime sporting landscape than many historians have previously recognized. Furthermore, between 1939 and 1945, a substantial portion of the cricket played – particularly within the island of Great Britain – carried prono…
Elusive Democracy: Dalit Politics, Elections, and the Dilemmas of Representation
Today, India is widely celebrated as the world's largest democracy. However, not all groups experience India's political institutions the same way. This book draws on extensive interviews with longtime Dalit (ex-Untouchable) activists and original archives of party documents to explore the democratic transformation of one of India's most prominent Dalit-led parties, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK; Liberation Panthers Party). Through a hi…
Measuring Attribution in Natural Language Generation Models
Large neural models have brought a new challenge to natural language generation (NLG): it has become imperative to ensure the safety and reliability of the output of models that generate freely. To this end, we present an evaluation framework, Attributable to Identified Sources (AIS), stipulating that NLG output pertaining to the external world is to be verified against an independent, provided source. We define AIS and a two-stage annotation pip…
Cruise Ship Itineraries: An Investigation of the Effect of Itinerary on Cruise Pricing
This study investigated cruise ship stateroom pricing to determine if cruise ship itinerary has a significant effect on stateroom pricing. The study analyzed pricing data for cruise ship voyages originating and returning to a North American port. Cruise prices were reduced to a price per day for all voyages and linear regression analysis was used to investigate if cruise ship itinerary had a significant effect on cruise ship pricing. A linear reg…
Mortgage Broker Loan Pricing Leading Up to the Financial Crisis: Were Yield Spread Premiums the Only Problem
This article examines mortgage broker pricing in New York during the years leading up to the financial crisis. Broker compensation practices in 2005 through 2007, primarily the use of yield spread premiums (YSPs), led the Federal Reserve to promulgate new rules in 2011 that disallowed loan originators who receive compensation directly from the consumer from also receiving compensation from the lender or another party. This consumer testing rule p…

Henry Adams’s "Democracy": Intelligence, Sentiment, and Politics in the American 1880s
This article considers Henry Adams's 1880 novel Democracy in the context of his lobbying for civil-service reform, to show how the novel mobilizes proto-eugenic discourses of measurable "intelligence" and biological "merit" in its depiction of the characteristics Adams demanded of political actors in the new post-bellum era of American capitalist imperialism. Drawing on recent critical work on biopower and sentimental culture by Kyla Schuller and…

This article considers the friendship between the Cuban leader José Martí and the US journalist Charles Anderson Dana in relation to questions of transnationalism, print culture, modernist aesthetics, and the politics of dissent during the era of the Cuban War of Independence (1895–8). It investigates the radical potential and aesthetic difficulties of rendering genuine affection in print at a time in which American friendliness towards Cuba ofte…

Rabindranath Tagore and the Politics of Friendship
Caught between an arrogant European modernist elite and a proprietorial Indian nationalism, Tagore challenged the spatial dimensions of modernity by critiquing both Eurocentrism and a simplistic anti-imperialism. Tagore did build bridges with some Western intellectuals and social activists but much of his life illustrates the difficulties of meaningful cross-cultural relations and the shortcomings of a liberal ‘politics of friendship’. If this is…
The Rule of Men Entirely Great: Republicanism, Ritual, andRichelieuin Melville's 'The Two Temples
This article explores the complex and multifarious reasons behind Herman Melville’s decision to refer to the English playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1839 work Richelieu, or The Conspiracy in his 1854 diptych ‘The Two Temples’. It responds to a critical tradition that has seen the reference merely as a sarcastic attack on William Macready (whose rivalry with the American actor Edwin Forrest was the nominal cause of the bloody 1849 Astor Place Ri…

English Commercial Banks and Organizational Inertia: The Financing of SMEs, 1944–1960
This article is a study in the strength of shared strategic beliefs amongst leading British clearing bankers in the years following World War II and how those common beliefs may have inhibited potential for market growth. The subject of the study is the performance of large British deposit bankswith respect to the financing of industry. This behavior has long been criticized by economic historians as suboptimal and, depending on the commentator, …
Signifying in New Orleans: Notes on a Journey into the Imaginal
Signifying in New OrleansNotes on a Journey into the Imaginal Michael Collins (bio) My trip to the March 2008 Callaloo retreat in New Orleans began, unbeknownst to myself, on January 9, 2008, when I wrote an irate (and of course never published) note to The New York Times protesting an op-ed by Gloria Steinem. In her January 8 essay, “Women Are Never Front-Runners,” Steinem argued that the Iowa victory that catapulted Obama to the front of the De…

The Afterlife
The Afterlife Michael Collins (bio) The unlucky dead, caught still in the burning net of transience, would hardly know what to make of themselves or their afterlives in our minds. As if heaven and hell were fruit of idle afternoons or gossip column headlines—conspiracy theorists kneeling on the grassy knoll, drawing pentagrams with one point at ground zero, one at the Lorraine Motel—as if limbo were the mouth of a chain-smoking matron who a gener…
The Antipanopticon of Etheridge Knight
Panopticism seeks to make the pysche visible to a top-down system of examination and classification. In the process, it drives out privacy, the right to privacy, and, with them, the right to free self-making. Against this driving out, Etheridge Knight poses a remarkable body of poetry and prose that becomes a kind of antipanopticon in its cultivation of unconstrained communication and communion. During the years he spent as a “guest” of the India…

Head-Driven Statistical Models for Natural Language Parsing
This article describes three statistical models for natural language parsing. The models extend methods from probabilistic context-free grammars to lexicalized grammars, leading to approaches in which a parse tree is represented as the sequence of decisions corresponding to a head-centered, top-down derivation of the tree. Independence assumptions then lead to parameters that encode the X-bar schema, subcategorization, ordering of complements, pl…
The Banking Crisis of 1878
Banks, Industry and Finance, 1880–1914
This article uses contemporary business records to provide the first authoritative empirical breakdown of the general characteristics of English commercial bank lending to industrial firms in the three and a half decades before the First World War. The results confirm that the bulk of commercial bank support for industry was in the form of short-term credit. In particular, the overdraft system was operated in such a way as to provide industrial c…

Wilson-Leonard An 11,000-year Archeological Record of Hunter-Gatherers in Central Texas Volume IV: Archeological Features and Technical Analyses
Study of the archeology of the Wilson-Leonard site has opened broad new vistas for the reexamination and improved interpretation of regional prehistory. Beyond that, it is of national importance in terms of both data and interpretation (for example, on the Paleoindian era) and the concepts used in its excavation and analysis. It is unique in other ways. In most cases, deep, stratified, multicomponent sites of this integrity are rarely excavated (…
Industrial Lending by English Commercial Banks, 1860s–1914: Why Did Banks Refuse Loans
English commercial banks have suffered severe criticism for their alleged failure to support industrial activity, to provide 'industrial finance'. They are said to compare unfavourably with their European counterparts. In this article we explore this issue by examining how in the years before 1914 these banks treated loan applications from industrialists, specifically analysing the extent of refusals and the reasons given for refusals. The result…

Community Politics in Liverpool and the Governance of Professional Football in the Late Nineteenth Century
This article studies the political significance of the schism that occurred at Liverpool's single professional football club in 1892 and which led to the incorporation of two clubs, Everton FC and Liverpool FC. Significantly, the management and direction of professional football had become bound up with community politics and identity at a time of important change in municipal politics when the tories' ascendancy faced a Liberal challenge partly …
Sectoral Differences in English Bank Asset Structures and the Impact of Mergers, 1860-1913
This article presents new, half-yearly time series on commercial bank asset ratios, broken down by types of commercial bank, 1860-1913. The new estimates highlight the degree of heterogeneity present in bank asset structures and they reveal differences in both trends and short-term movements in the asset ratios across different types of bank. The significance of these findings on the heterogeneity of commercial bank balance sheets derives from th…
The durability of transaction banking practices in the provision of finance to the business sector by British banks
Organisational Control and English Commercial Bank Lending to Industry in the decades before World War I
The governance of charitable trusts in the nineteenth century: The West Riding of Yorkshire
Charitable donations were essential to social welfare provision in England and Wales in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This article uses a principal-agent framework to examine the governance problems faced by endowed charities - problems that were uniquely acute because, on one side, the principal (the charity's benefactor) was usually long since dead and, on the other, the main intended beneficiaries (the poor) were inarticulate and po…

The Langton Papers: Banking and Bank of England Policy in the 1830s
For a long time dumping has been considered a problem in international trade, an unfair practice that reflects the existence of price discrimination in different markets that can only exist if competitive forces are not operating. It is claimed that antidumping measures have a legitimate role to play in maintaining a liberal trading order by restoring conditions of fair and workable competition. But this is only the so-called rhetoric of the anti…
Monetary Policy and the Supply of Trade Credit, 1830-1844
The 1830s were years of instability for the English and Welsh money markets. The tremendous expansion of joint stock banking facilities, the rapid development of the London money market, the monetary crises of 1836-1837 and 1839, and the commercial rivalry among the established private banks, the new banking companies and the Bank of England all created great uncertainty. The problems provoked widespread comment and provided opportunities for gov…
Relationships between Sex-Role Orientation and Attitudes toward Women as Managers

Within each sex sample there were modest, but significant, relationships between sex-role orientation and attitudes toward women as managers; …

The Scottish Provincial Banking Companies, 1747-1864
A study of the early Scottish provincial banks has been long overdue. In view of the praise and international emulation of the Scottish banking system in the nineteenth century and the subsequent accolade of historians, it is perhaps surprising that the wealth of surviving bank archives has not been subject earlier to the kind of intensive treatment that is the achievement of this book. Charles Munn first examines the evolution of the provincial …
