  • Social capital, social heterogeneity, and electoral turnout

Open Access•Jeremy Clark, Abel François et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2024

Among the many studied determinants of voting, we predict that i) increased social capital will be positively associated with turnout, while increased heterogeneity will be negatively associated; ii) both factors will work through their influence on the costs of information gathering and on the social norms of voting; and iii) that heterogeneity will interact with social capital in its association with turnout. We test these predictions at the ex…

  • Emphasising the Problem or the Solution in Charitable Fundraising for International Development

Jeremy Clark, Arlene Garces‐ozanne et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2018

We conduct a laboratory experiment to test the effect on charitable donations to international development NGOs (INGOs) of emphasising current deprivation in a developing country, versus emphasising the potential good a donation can achieve. Using a double-blind dictator experiment with earned endowments, we find that varying the information/emphasis has no significant effect on total donations, nor on the probability of donating. We find suggest…

Eunicia Jones, Megan Oka et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 6

Young widowhood is a unique experience that has received little in-depth attention in research and clinical settings. The present study examined the lived experiences of young men and women who had lost a spouse. Eleven men and women between the ages of 18 and 49 were interviewed about their experiences postloss using phenomenological methods. After coding the interviews, three themes emerged: (1) relationship prior to death, (2) coping, and (3) …

  • (I Am) My Father's Son

    Jeremy Clark•ARTICLE•Callaloo•2015

(I Am) My Father’s Son Jeremy Clark (bio) you grew into a name i’d never heard. a void. i tiptoed around its edges. unbelievable, blank, unable to articulate. remember this face. i knew you’d never hold me and i want to hold you responsible— but you’re a ghost before me— i learned well, how to leave an outlinetrace the contours of my face— in the mirror. i waited. pay attention: a solitary heart is retrievable. still, you had no heart at all to t…

  • Overconfidence in Forecasts of Own Performance

    Open Access•Jeremy Clark, Lana Friesen•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 52

Systematic overconfidence by individuals regarding their abilities and prospects could have important economic consequences. But overconfidence has received little direct testing within economics. We use experiments to test for overconfidence in people's forecasts of their absolute or relative performance in two unfamiliar tasks. Given their chosen effort, participants have incentives to forecast accurately, with opportunities for feedback, learn…
