Helminth Infections in Wild Golden Monkeys ( Cercopithecus mitis kandti ) in Rwanda
Habitat loss is one of the greatest threats to extant primates, with effects that are immediate and time delayed. Identifying how habitat loss affects wildlife, particularly vulnerable populations, is important to understand the mechanisms that can lead to population decline. Golden monkeys are a subspecies of guenon with two extant populations: one larger (> 4000) on the Virunga Massif, and the other smaller (~200) in Gishwati Forest. Once conne…
The Effect of Sampling Schedule on Assessment of Dietary Measures: Evidence From Blue Monkeys ( Cercopithecus mitis stuhlmanni )
Accurately assessing primate diets is important in studies of behavioral ecology and evolution. While previous research has compared sampling methods (scan, focal), we examined how sampling schedule influences accuracy of dietary measures. We define sampling schedule as the combined distribution (random vs. consecutive) and frequency of sampling days within a given month. Under field conditions, time may be required to locate a study group, and w…
Exploring Parent and Autistic Youth Perspectives to Inform Adaptations for an Advocacy Program
Autistic Youth and their parents often struggle to access adult disability services. It is important to garner feedback from autistic youth and their parents to inform interventions to facilitate access to adult services. In this study, 128 parents of transition-aged autistic youth and 78 autistic youth completed individual interviews to inform adaptations to an advocacy program designed to improve access to adult services. Parents reported wanti…
Identifying the Correlates of Individual, Peer and Systemic Advocacy Among Parents of Children with Disabilities Who are Interested in Civic Engagement
Parent advocacy is often critical for families of individuals with disabilities. Prior research has suggested that parent advocacy occurs across three levels: individual, peer, and systemic. Yet, little empirical research has identified the correlates of advocacy for each level. For this study, we examined the survey responses of 246 parents of individuals with disabilities who were interested in participating in a legislative advocacy program. A…

A Burden of Flame:An Interview with Amanda Johnston Kyle G. Dargan and Amanda Johnston (bio) This interview was conducted via e-mail in August, 2007, between Washington, D.C. and Austin, Texas. KYLE G. DARGAN: Would you say Torch grew out of a greater need or a more personal desire to disseminate and spotlight the work of women who are writing? AMANDA JOHNSTON: As a writer, I continually look for work by authors like myself—contemporary black wom…
Types of Benzodiazepines Abused by Chemically Dependent Inpatients
Records of inpatients (N = 1,483) over a three-year period at an addiction treatment center were evaluated for the presence of benzodiazepine (BZ) dependence (N = 136). The preferred BZ for 43% of the subjects was diazepam, and alprazolam for 14% of subjects. Chlordiazepoxide, lorazepam, and clorazepate were each the preferred BZ for 4% of patients. Cocaine and opioid abusers were six times more likely to abuse diazepam than any other BZ. Alprazo…
