Pentecostal Lyrical Theology in Dialogue with Lutherans on Water Baptism
Lutheran–Pentecostal dialogue has devoted significant attention to water baptism. Much of this reflection, however, has been encumbered by a lack of developed scholarly attention given to baptism among Pentecostals. Pentecostal language of ordinance and symbolism has even led Lutherans to critique Pentecostal baptismal theology as anthropocentric and anaemic. To correct this misunderstanding, I study a Pentecostal baptismal hymn – Brooke and Scot…
Workers' remittances in Central America
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine two issues about remittances in Central American countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua). First, whether the inflow of remittances impacts income in the long run. Second, what motivates migrants to send remittances? The first issue is analyzed in the context of a permanent income hypothesis, while the second is analyzed in the context of altruism versus self-interest m…
Pentecostal Mysticism and African American Hymnody
Despite the growing interest in Pentecostal mysticism, scholarship has devoted little attention to the prominence of music in the spirituality of the tradition. I examine a Pentecostal musician and one of her songs to demonstrate how mystical sensibilities are fostered in the Pentecostal community. Willie Mae Ford Smith’s musical style, at home in the Pentecostal church, allowed her to express mystical themes within her performances. The examined…
The Legacy of The Fundamentals in the Historiography of American Ecumenism
The historical narrative of American ecumenism’s origins in the early twentieth century has not been revisited for generations. When future scholars revisit it, they should study the period for the sake of supporting the future work of ecumenism. Part of this work is the expansion of ecumenical bodies to include churches not currently engaged. I propose that the early pamphlet series, The Fundamentals, offers a good place to start. The pamphlets …
Pentecostalism as a Christian Mystical Tradition, written by Daniel Castelo
Ecumenism
Native American Contributions to a Christian Theology of Space
Native Christian theologians frequently contribute to a theology of space through their writings on other theological subjects. Native American traditionalism is structured spatially; mythology, rituals and ethics are entirely focused on the tribe's surroundings and the individual's responsibility in living within his or her own place. Thus, Native Christians continue this thought by expressing and exploring the Christian faith through spatial co…
