Economic Miracles and Their Hypes
This essay argues that economic miracles are the result of particular processes and procedures to establish a regime of truth. Taking the example of Ivory Coast from the 1950s through the early 1980s as core evidence, the author shows the role of public relations in creating a particular perception of economic achievements. Using the emergence of both West Germany and Japan as early examples in the wake of postwar reconstruction, it is further un…
De l’ancrage d’une ville africaine
The starting point of this article is an observation: the virtual absence of consideration of the long term in Africanist studies on the globalization of African cities. Taking the Abidjan of late colonialism as a case in point, it has been shown that the conurbation has been part of large-scale flows since the 1950s. The creation of its deep-water port and its commissioning facilitated the worldwide circulation of an imaginary that made Abidjan …
Displacing the French? Ivorian Development and the Question of Economic Decolonisation, 1946–1975
Mightier Than Marx
Using the travels of Hassoldt Davis in Ivory Coast to explore the global Cold War in French West Africa in the 1950s, this article argues that the main line of confrontation in the postwar era did not always pit Americans against Russians. In many instances, the struggle for the mind and soul of Africans was between the Americans and the French. The study highlights the role of everyday technology in the expansion of the American informal empire.…
African Miracle, African Mirage
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Ivory Coast was touted as an African miracle, a poster child for modernization and the ways that Western aid and multinational corporations would develop the continent. At the same time, Marxist scholars—most notably Samir Amin—described the capitalist activity in Ivory Coast as empty, unsustainable, and incapable of bringing real change to the lives of ordinary people. In African Miracle, African Mirage, Abou B. B…
Conspicuous, Yet Invisible
This article focuses on the recent history of French residents in (post)colonial Ivory Coast. I argue that the majority of the French candidates for expatriation to the territory were not fundamentally different from other emigrants, mostly Africans, who relocated to the West African country to improve their chances for a better life. Although the French have been invisible in the scholarly literature on immigration to Ivory Coast, largely due to…
Transnationalising decolonisation
At the Edge of the Modern? Diplomacy, Public Relations, and Media Practices During Houphouët-Boigny's 1962 Visit to the United States
Toward the end of the first decade after the decolonization of most African countries, there emerged a scholarly polemic about the weight of bureaucratic politics in the making of foreign policy in the Third World. A mirror of the reigning modernization paradigm that informed most postwar area studies and social sciences, the discussion unintentionally indexed the narcissism of a hegemonic discourse on political development and statecraft. Graham…
Triangulating a Modernization Experiment
Triangulating a Modernization Experiment: The United States, France and the Making of the Kossou Project in Central Ivory Coast This article attempts to analyse the complex history of the post-war modernization drives in Francophone Africa. It focuses on the damming of the Bandama River in central Ivory Coast. Adopting a transnational historical approach, I argue that the making of the Kossou damming experiment necessitated the importation of reg…
Canadian Journal of African Studies / Revue canadienne des études africaines: Vol. 44, No. 1, pp. 1-34
