Mid-air haptics for automotive HUDs
Innovations in the automotive industry, such as autonomous driving, AI assistants, head-up displays, and mid-air haptic touchless interactions, promise transformative benefits but may also introduce unanticipated risks and ethical concerns. To explore these potential challenges, we conducted a multi-stage study: first, we engaged 27 engineers specializing in touchless and automotive systems to envision future applications of mid-air haptics and h…

Sociotechnical imaginaries (SIs) have emerged as a popular and generative concept within Science and Technology Studies (STS). This article draws out the affective component of SIs, combining a review of relevant literatures with an empirical case study of an anti-fracking imaginary in Ireland to suggest how we might theorize an affective technopolitics of SIs. The literature review identifies three key aspects of SIs that would benefit from a mo…

Foundations for longevity
In 2019, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) will celebrate its Centenary as one of the oldest international organisations. In this paper, we argue that important insights into this institutional resilience can be provided by an examination of the activities of the early ILO Directors and the establishment of three principal strategies – autonomy, presence and relevance. Through the case study of New Zealand, we demonstrate how these stra…
What is Tamil about Tamil cinema
This paper argues that the ‘Tamil-ness’ of Tamil cinema was not based on any fixed linguistic identity, but was constructed as a matter of production practice and critical discourse after the introduction of sound film during the 1930s. Using contemporary sources the paper looks at how the Tamil part of Tamil cinema was constructed through changes in film form, production and music at a time when producers and directors were confronted with new a…
The characteristics of extractive and smelting landscapes of the Industrial Revolution at Swansea and Blaenavon
In the following article detailed work on the internationally significant eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century landscapes at Blaenavon and Swansea are examined to see what the determinants of extractive, smelting and indeed of human landscapes might be. The availability of minerals was the primary determinant of location but linear features of transport and water power formed the framework upon which these landscapes developed. Initially, at …
Music in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction
During the first half of the twentieth century, new mass media practices radically altered traditional cultural forms and performance in a complex encounter that incited much debate, criticism, and celebration the world over. This essay examines how the new sound media of gramophone and sound cinema took up the live performance genres of Tamil drama. Professor Hughes argues that south Indian music recording companies and their products prefigured…

This article explores how genre matters for the history of cinema audiences in south India. I focus on the development of silent film genre categories in south India during the 1920s as they were used according to the local conditions to help imagine, define and cultivate cinema audiences. I argue that from the late- 1910s, film genre classifications helped exhibitors and film critics to conceive of, calculate and socially differentiate the stead…
Institutional Buildings in Worker Settlements
This article seeks to compare workers' settlements in both Britain and mainland Europe in order to evaluate what distinctive features may be located in such townships, particularly with regard to institutional buildings and features. The religious and educational buildings of the settlements are considered to see where the respective state, employer or employee was the primary influence in the establishment of such institutions in the worker comm…
The International Labour Standards Regime
The World Trade Organisation's (WTO) consistent rejection of proposals for the inclusion of a social clause into its existing rules and regulations has prompted the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to examine alternative ways in which global consensus on the regulation of labour standards can be developed. In this paper we map the failure of the social clause debate by reference to the outcome of successive WTO ministerials and we examine …
The International Collieries Study
The Global Strategy to attain a balanced World Heritage List has been running for ten years. Now is an appropriate time to review what has been achieved in relation to Industrial Archaeology and to make available a study which only appeared in final form on the internet during 2003. No less than half of the twelve studies so far produced as part of this strategy concern the functional and social elements of the industrial heritage. These, and an …

This paper addresses the relationship between economic transition and industrial relations in the Central European country of Hungary and is one result of research undertaken in Hungary, the UK and New Zealand between 1990-1992. It examines the development of economic reforms in Hungary up to the present day and the role of trade unions in the reform process. It argues that current approaches to economic reform are taking insufficient account of …
